As we celebrate this joyful occasion, let’s remember those brothers and sisters who can not join in the celebrations because they are suffering from conflict and drought. May Peace prevail in our Region and the World, and may the Creator bestow us with His Compassion and Bounty!

I am deeply saddened by the passing of H.E. Nicholas (Fink) Haysom, Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of UNMISS. On behalf of IGAD, I extend sincere condolences to his family and the United Nations. We worked closely in advancing the implementation of the Revitalized Peace Agreement (RARCSS), where his leadership and commitment were instrumental in supporting peace efforts in South Sudan. His passing is a great loss to the region. We honour his legacy. May his soul rest in peace.

With the largest global humanitarian crisis in Sudan and conflicts in a number of other IGAD countries, the ICRC has the largest assistance operation in our Region. Glad to join James Reynolds, the ICRC Deputy Regional Director for Africa, Kenya Government officials, Ambassadors, humanitarian organizations and others in the Launch of the ICRC Humanitarian Outlook and Appeal 2026, in Nairobi Kenya. Thanks to the Government of Kenya for hosting the largest ICRC operational and logistics center in the World, and for being a safe haven for refugees and displaced persons from across the Region. Drought continues to impact many communities in our Region, particularly pastoralists and small scale farmers. Glad to have extensive discussions in Nairobi, Kenya, with scientists from The IGAD Drought Disaster Resilience and Sustainability Initiative (IDDRSI) and The IGAD Centre for Pastoral Areas and Livestock Development (ICPALD to address ways of addressing this issue by putting Pastoralism and animal husbandry in general at the center of the food security agenda.

Glad to welcome HE Hironori Suzuki, Director of the Second Africa Division, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Japan accompanied by Japan Ambassador to Djibouti and IGAD HE Akihiro Okochi, to IGAD Headquarters, in Djibouti. A thorough discussion on the Peace and Security situation in our Region, and the role of IGAD in back-channel diplomacy, mediation, reconciliation and state consolidation. Japan is an important partner for @IGADsecretariat and its Member States. @MofaJapan_en

Congratulations to HE James Swan for his appointment by the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, as his Special Representative for the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO). Jim has ably led the UNSOM/UNTMIS Mission in Somalia, over the years, in several appointments, and has steered the International community’s efforts in the Stabilization and State Building in Somalia, during several critical periods, most notably through the contested election processes of 2020-22. His departure at this critical juncture is a big loss for Somalia, but his cool temperament, boundless optimism, and meticulous professionalism will be a valuable gain for the Democratic Republic of Congo. I wish him well in his new endeavors.
