PICTORIAL: Our Day 1 celebrations of our 20th anniversary continue this evening with a night dedicated to honouring the resilience and courage of human rights defenders across the East and Horn of Africa. The evening will feature powerful testimonials from defenders who have stood firm in the face of adversity, sharing stories of courage, solidarity, and impact. We will also launch our Endowment Fund and Mentorship Programme; key initiatives aimed at ensuring the sustainability, protection, and growth of human rights work for generations to come. As we reflect on two decades of defending and promoting the work of human rights defenders, we also look ahead with renewed commitment to the future of the protection and promotion of human rights across the continent. #20YearsDefending

Yesterday, in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, in partnership with @SweMFA ,we launched a 4-year, $9.3 million Swedish Initiative for Facilitating Trade in Africa (SWIFT), an initiative to unlock trade potential by leveraging bilateral and regional funding from Sweden. #SWIFT will transform the Abidjan-Lagos, Berbera, and LAPSSET corridors through digitalisation, smart infrastructure & inclusion of women, youth and border communities. The initiative will also address the realities of informal trade, focusing on women and youth traders, by investing in training, setting up of secure waiting spaces for women, access to electricity to improve the security and accessibility of the border posts and rain protection to shield products of these traders, traders, addressing specific barriers and promoting economic empowerment. By 2028, SWIFT will contribute to halving cargo clearance times at key border crossing points in participating countries, increase exports by 20%, and enable a 10–20% rise in formalised trade by targeted women and youth.
