One thing I've wondered @GarethDennis about wheel slip systems... They're compared with anti-lock braking, but rail has the extra function of preventing wheel damage during sliding. Does this extra function compromise braking distance? x.com/raibgovuk/stat…

why does the RBA make cash rate decisions on the day they make horses run around in a big circle?

@Nirgal451 Guarantee they'll find it's mud a long way down. (The first Hawkesbury River bridge scored a world record when constructed for the deepest foundations in mud)

This is a high-speed rail proposal set up to fail. The dumbest, most expensive route. They literally plan to tunnel all the way from Central Station to Gosford. Drilling begins on east coast high-speed rail route msn.com/en-au/news/aus…

"Yeah hi CEO of KiwiRail, it's the minister. Just wondering if you can approve the paperwork to allow me to wander the Hutt Workshops and take photographs as part of my morning stroll?" "Me again. Bored of the same locos every day. Send a DH or two down from Auckland please"

Sure, it's the most obvious junket, but I'd also be lying if I said that as minister for transport (in the McAnulty coalition govt of 2029–41) I wouldn't use it as an excuse to visit overseas railway museums or wrangle railway corridor access to go gunzelling and get rare shots
Winston Peters@NewZealandMFA

The Minister is attending the Melbourne Cup at Flemington today, exploring cooperation b/w the 🇳🇿 & 🇦🇺 racing industries; and b/w 🇳🇿 & Victoria. @DrDreHistorian When Alan Brown was Minister for Public Transport his office had an electric staff instrument - which apparently went home with him when he moved on.

@railmaps Probably collapse of a stope (void where the rock has been removed). The mine statement suggests an unplanned collapse...

@railmaps I've noticed some of the local bus companies nail little signs on electricity poles to mark turns on routes...

Amusing episode this afternoon. Travelling home on the local bus, the driver took a wrong turn and ended up going the wrong way around the school diversion. He picked up the kids on the opposite side of the road to the bus stop (not at all a busy road so no real danger).

@mattcollins @pia_planning @RegionalAus LOL. How do we have population plan when we don't agree on the goals we are trying to achieve? (Not to mention that the biggest determinant of population - birthrate - is outside the government's control)

@PRO_Vic "Some work" Actually, it's the replacement of the hand gates with boom barriers. So we can date the photos to mid 1956. Springvale road is at least sealed in the photos, but a bit narrower than today. And I don't think there are many tractors on it now.

The Springvale Road level crossing in #Nunawading is undergoing some work in these #SuburbsofMelbourne Monday photos. Initially opened as Tunstall, the station was renamed Nunawading on 1 November 1945. 📸 VPRS 12800/P1 H2822 and 2823. Undated.

I can’t help thinking that after this is all done and dusted, whichever way it falls, there is a story to be told about manipulation of perception by persons or entities as yet unknown.

I don’t know who is going to win the US election, and there’s no question about which candidate would be best for the US and the world. But being dispassionate about it for a moment, there’s something really interesting going on just now, and I don’t understand it.

@aussiewongm @zoqaeski @vojtasTS29 @AussieWirraway Indusi would have been high risk. AFAIK Indusi has never been installed in conjunction with the UK derived signalling used in Australia. German signalling technology has some very different principles. TPWS integration came off-the-shelf.

@aussiewongm @zoqaeski @vojtasTS29 @AussieWirraway Thx - read the paper that Marcus linked. TPWS fulfilled the safety requirements (note which were not full ATP) and was the cheapest option. Full ATP would have been nice, but note that ETCS installations are only now starting to be deployed in Oz - 20 years later.

The new Geelong timetable is incredible because despite replacing N sets (capable of 115km/h) with VLocity trains (capable of 160km/h), they have managed to shave just 0-2 minutes off between Melbourne and Geelong lol
