Hi Everyone! I'm Captain Jason Cokinos your new MCPD 3rd District Commander. 3D was my first assignment when I joined MCPD, so It is cool to be back in this role. I look forward to serving the community and sharing info related to Silver Spring!

License Plate Reader (LPR) technology leads officers to stolen auto arrest 🚙🚓🚓 This afternoon members of your @mcpnews 3rd District Community Action Team (DCAT) received an LPR hit for a stolen auto that was traveling south on New Hampshire Avenue near Chalmers Rd in the Hillandale area of Silver Spring. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle which subsequently rammed into two community members' vehicles before getting stuck in traffic. Officers had to break out the car window and were then able to quickly take the suspect into custody without further issues. The car was stolen and the license plate was also stolen from a different vehicle. The adult male arrestee was taken to central processing and booked. License Plate Reader (LPR) technology has provided some great successes locating felony vehicles and apprehending dangerous criminals. #MCPD #publicsafety

Another traffic stop, another illegally possessed gun seized 🚔 Your @mcpnews 3rd District evening shift patrol officers conducted a traffic stop on Cherry Hill Rd near Gracefield Rd in the White Oak area of Silver Spring. During the stop probable cause was generated to lawfully search the vehicle which resulted in a loaded handgun being found under the driver's seat. The driver was arrested and said he bought the gun from someone on the street in New York. The arrestee was subsequently transported to central processing and booked. Community members can expect to see continued enforcement along Cherry Hill Rd through the weekend. #MCPD #publicsafety

@TheDMVLive Indeed one person said they heard a sound but can't confirm what exactly It was. No evidence located of a shooting and no one shot. Officers remained on scene for a bit just to be thorough.

HAPPENING NOW: Major police response to a bus stop on Georgia Ave at Dennis Ave in Forest Glen, MD 🚨 Montgomery County Police were initially called out for a shooting. No gunshot victims were found, however police remain on scene. Information otherwise limited…

@JimPatrick73478 @mcpnews Everyone was arrested. They were not in possession legally. For example the juvenile or convicted felon. We do not seize guns that are lawfully possessed / in compliance with Maryland state law.

🚨FIVE (5) illegally possessed guns 🔫 seized from various stops in the past four days in Silver Spring 🤯🤯 Your @mcpnews 3rd District officers have been very busy this week removing guns from the street, working to prevent shootings and interdict crime. - A juvenile was apprehended after a foot chase where the subject tossed a loaded gun while running from officers. - A traffic stop revealed a gun with extended magazine concealed in the driver's waistband (down the front of their pants). -A handgun and cocaine were seized during a traffic stop after a drug deal was observed. -Two guns seized & two occupants in a vehicle were arrested after a traffic stop. Each subject possessed a handgun, one of the guns had a drum magazine 😳 ..... and the week isn't over yet! #MCPD #PublicSafety

MCPD officers will have an increased presence in downtown Silver Spring this evening as warm weather brings more people to the area. Officers will be working with Metro Transit Police to address traffic safety issues and prevent illegal street takeovers and car rallies. #MCPNews

Just an update - Arrest made, no one injured. @mcpnews 3rd District officers responded for an anonymous call for a shot fired in the area. Officers found one shell casing but no people had been shot. @mcpnews Real Time Intelligence Center (RTIC) located an image of a potential suspect from cameras in the area. Officers located a subject who matched that description in the 8400 block of Fenton Street. The subject was stopped and found to be in possession of a handgun. The adult male was prohibited from possessing the handgun due to a prior felony conviction. He was arrested and transported to central processing. #MCPD

2024 crime was down from 2023.... now we have seen many categories of crime continuing to decline in 2025 compared to 2024. These year over year crime declines couldn't happen without the dedicated men and women serving our community in the @mcpnews 3rd District. I'm thankful for their efforts and what they do each day to improve our community. We are going to keep pushing here in 2026 for more positive outcomes working in partnership with other government agencies, businesses, and our community. #MCPD #PublicSafety

Out of an abundance of caution, MCPD has increased patrols and officer visibility around religious institutions and sensitive locations, as we continue to monitor the situation in the Middle East. At this time, there are no known threats to our community. #MCPD #MCPNews

Your @mcpnews 3rd District officers are actively monitoring the events unfolding around the globe. Although there are no credible threats to anything in Silver Spring, we will be conducting patrols around all of our various religious institutions. Traffic stop 🚔 leads to gun seizure and felony drug charges in downtown Silver Spring Tonight (2/20/26) at around 8PM your @mcpnews 3rd District Community Action Team (DCAT) conducted a traffic stop in the area of Georgia Ave and Spring Street in downtown Silver Spring. During the stop a handgun was observed near the driver who was safely removed from the vehicle. A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed: - a loaded handgun - marijuana with a scale -approximately 50 deadly fentanyl pills -approximately 34 MDMA (ecstasy) pills -over a dozen oxycodone pills Evidence indicates these drugs were for possessed for sales. The adult sole vehicle occupant, who is from Virginia, was transported and processed at central booking for felony drug charges and handgun charges. Excellent work by these officers taking dangerous drugs and a gun off of the street! #MCPD #publicsafety

UPDATE: One person has been detained and it has been determined that there was no gun. There is no current threat to the Blair campus. @MCPS will make the decision when to lift the lockdown.
