Meta analysis suggests patients with various bacterial, viral, & fungal infections (Helicobacter pylori, hepatitis C virus, Malassezia, & pneumoniae) might have increased risk of #Parkinsons. Antiviral treatment of HCV could reduce the risk of PD

A word cloud from the final thesis of our Master's student, Christopher Rousso, who successfully defended his thesis in November. Chris has done exciting work on the role of alpha-synuclein in the #immunesystem both in the brain and the periphery.

Dr. Michael Schlossmacher's research aims to unravel some of the mystery around #Parkinson’s, a disease for which there is no cure, or even a way to slow the progress.
His team's latest study is a step in that direction.

Take a look at our paper from 2017 to see our findings on possible anti-microbial effects of #alphasynuclein and an exciting new staining technique created by our lab
The Science of Parkinson's@ScienceofPD
@topdresearch David Beckham's lab has shown that alpha synuclein has antiviral properties ( ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P… ), & Michael Schlossmacher's lab has a similar line of research (ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P…). So this new PARKIN research is interesting from this standpoint as well
