Today, @stormchaseralan with Midwest Wx will be live in the field chasing a developing severe weather threat as numerous thunderstorms are expected this afternoon and tonight, with the greatest risk centered across Illinois and Indiana. All hazards are possible, including strong to intense tornadoes, widespread damaging winds exceeding 75 mph, and large hail. Discrete supercells capable of producing significant severe weather are expected this afternoon before storms evolve into a line this evening, with damaging winds becoming the primary threat. Residents in affected areas should remain weather aware and have multiple ways to receive warnings, including local news, NOAA Weather Radio, and Wireless Emergency Alerts on your phone. Know where you will take shelter if warnings are issued. If you must travel today, keep travel to a minimum whenever possible and be familiar with the locations of community storm shelters or other sturdy shelter options along your route. When the SPC and various NWS WFOs use language like "outbreak expected" and "long-tracked strong-violent tornadoes," there is sound reasoning behind it. Yes, there are a few fail modes -- but this could be one of the most concerning setups of 2026 and, if trends hold, could warrant a 5/5 high risk tomorrow. #wx

Severe Weather Alert – Wednesday The Team is continuing to monitor this significant severe weather setup expected across parts of the Midwest on Wednesday, with a Moderate Risk in place for portions of central Illinois into northwest Indiana. Forecast models and SPC are showing storms may produce intense tornadoes, damaging winds up to 80 mph, and hail up to 2.5 inches in diameter. The greatest threat extends from eastern Iowa and northern Missouri into Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio during the afternoon and evening hours. Residents in the affected areas should remain weather aware and have multiple ways to receive warnings, as this could be a significant day.
