Important to specify that in biology, "sexes" and "mating types" are not the same thing. They are fundamentally different. Sexes is a term that relates to anisogamy. Mating types relate to isogamy. So, someone claiming there are more than two sexes and then using mating types as evidence would be in the wrong.
