More like a dreamhd! Not only the opportunity to learn with an incredible source of knowledge, but also a chance to be meaningfully involved in the initial stages of drug checking service delivery and research in Australia.

Very proud of this paper from my wife @LiseLafferty and PhD student @MJxStowe (and others) on novel ways to engage community and early and mid-career researchers in networking at conferences reflecting on experiences from @INHepSU in INHSU 2022 in Glasgow. Amazing work!!

Great commentary by @DrSuziNielsen @MJxStowe @AlisonRitter1 on two recent papers in @ijdrugpolicy and emerging evidence on safer supply. I love their comment about the famous systematic review of randomised controlled trials of parachutes! bmj.com/content/327/74…

People who use drugs, from some of the most underserved populations and marginalised groups were given autonomy and authority over decision making a several stages of the research - great to see our study published. With @shaunshelly @SANPUD_NPO @GI_TOC & others.

Our colleagues at the Journal of Illicit Economies and Development released a study on drug consumption and markets in South Africa. "We estimated there to be: 400,000 people who use heroin; 350,000 who use cocaine & 290,000 who use methamphetamine." jied.lse.ac.uk/articles/10.31…

Drug research twerps: I have a vague memory that there was a recent update of Shane Darke's seminal 'validity of self report of substance use' paper - but I can't find it. Am I dreaming? Any tips gratefully received!

@nabarund Definitely some food for thought. Personally, I feel it would help provide context to methods/study design of some of our research in resource-constrained settings done on shoestring budgets (e.g. studies in SA with people who use drugs ).

@Bhekisisa_MG Absolutely! However, opioid agonist therapy should be offered to all people who use opioids - not only those who inject. We estimated that at least 30-40% smoke heroin in SA. A range of medications and delivery systems should be offered, with personal preference prioritised.

Mauritius had one of the highest rates of illicit opioid use in Africa. But a nationwide #OST programme changed this. What can South Africa learn from their roll-out? Find out here. bhekisisa.org/article/2023-0…

Working through conference imposter syndrome tonight. Years of rough sleeping, public injecting drug use, a PWUD for the majority of my life + operating an unsanctioned injection site is my education, but this education often feels invalid in some drug policy spaces.

@ADrugResearcher Is there much data on the detection of 3-CMC outside of Europe? For ages 'cat' has been reported to be methcathinone in SA but I was always baffled as it's not commonly detected elsewhere.

Some of our data from South Africa supports the misrepresentation of metaphedrone (3-MMC) as methcathinone. Makes senses given detection of 3-MMC globally. Curiouser and curiouser.
MJ Stowe@MJxStowe

Research into the chemical composition of suspected methcathinone samples in South Africa needed. Rationale? 1. Archer et al. (2017)’s detection of mephedrone in wastewater at select sites. 2. Our detection of methylone and butylone in suspected methcathinone samples.
