According to the United Nations System Common Position on Incarceration, children who lose a caregiver to the criminal justice system face greater challenges and are more likely to enter a “cycle of intergenerational risky behaviour and contact with the criminal justice system”. Given the disproportionate imprisonment of women for drug offenses, children globally are also victims of the “war on drugs”, impacting society as a whole in both the short and long term.
