We are delighted to announce that Dr  Debora Nyirenda prestigious @wellcometrust Career Development Award. Her fellowship will advance innovative social science research focused on understanding how communities experience and respond to the health impacts of climate change.

New funding for infectious disease clinical trials! 📣  We’re funding randomised controlled trials to optimise existing vaccines and therapeutics for infectious diseases. This research must be led by those closest to the challenge. The lead applicant must be based in a low- or middle-income country in Africa, South Asia, or South-East Asia. Trials should focus on one of the following disease areas: • mycobacterial infections (tuberculosis, leprosy or infections with non-tuberculous mycobacteria) • bacterial infections (sexually transmitted infections, lower respiratory tract infections or bloodstream infections) • invasive fungal infections • dengue, leishmaniasis or schistosomiasis If you have an innovative idea for a randomised controlled trial proposal, but need to build your team, develop your clinical trial protocol or generate pilot data, you can apply to our Infectious Disease Clinical Trial Development Award. A huge congratulations to our team members who swept the awards at the 2025 @KUHeS_mw Research Dissemination Conference. Well done!

The training follows a similar program recently conducted for healthcare workers, including nurses and doctors, focusing on hand hygiene and infection control procedures relevant to their roles.

This initiative aims to equip these essential staff members with the necessary skills for proper surface cleaning and hygiene practices to help prevent the spread of infections within the hospital environment.

Today, Thursday 15th May 2025, our Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Implementation Team is conducting a training session for support staff (cleaners, hospital attendants and security personnel) at Zomba Central Hospital.

Being facilitated by our IPC implement Study team, the presentations are being punctuated by reviews on the alternative steps commonly used when resources are limited. These alternatives are being evaluated in light of the potential infection risks they may pose.

These presentations have sparked discussions around the challenges faced by health workers at Zomba Central Hospital in adhering to gold standard procedures for urinary catheterisation and intravenous cannulation.
