Did you know that dads who start a new job aren’t eligible for paternity leave unless they’ve been in that job for 6 months? We’re changing that. This April, we’re introducing measures so that dads and partners can be present with their new child from day one of employment. Thanks again Mat and Lawrence for coming in to speak to me.

Car Finance NEWS: Its just out, on scan reading, most big picture stuff is what we knew. A few things stand out on cursory reading (un-fact checked)... - Average payout up from £700 to £830 per agreement, - Fewer agreements estimated to be missold 14m down to 12.1m (I need to work out why) - The interest rate is still base rate + 1%, which I was lobbying to be increased, they have moved a little now setting a minimum 3% per year - Higher payouts on pre 2014 car finance . I suspect there was some movement as (and I'd said this) - the prior payout reduction risked consumers choosing the court route not the FCA route and thus clogging up the courts. This is a slight redress of that misbalance. Now I need to dig into details, I'll update later once I've done a bit more reading.

Good Morning Britain
Bosses from Britain's largest energy suppliers will meet the Prime Minister in Downing Street today amid global fuel shortage concerns. Executives from Shell and BP, as well as shipping industry leaders, will discuss the impact of Iran’s ongoing blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route for oil. @SwainITV reports.

Reminder. Want to tell the Treasury Committee your views on student loans? The questionnaire for current and prospective students, graduates and university leavers is only open for two more weeks. Responses will help inform the Committee’s upcoming investigation. I’d encourage as many people as possible to take part. It may help push for change. The form is here: forms.office.com/pages/response… PS: The Treasury Committee is a cross-party committee of MPs, not part of the government. Its role is to scrutinise policy, examine legislation where relevant, and hold ministers and public bodies to account on behalf of Parliament. It can publish reports and put pressure on the government, though it does not itself make government policy.

Almost all local authorities in England are increasing rates by 5% – adding about £111 a year to a typical band D bill. In Scotland, households will see rises of between 4% and 10%, while in Wales bills will go up by 4% to 5%. Here's what you can expect: moneysavingexpert.com/news/2026/03/c…

NEW: Downing Street welcomes Donald Trump pressing pause on airstrikes on Iranian energy infrastructure. “Any reports of productive talks are welcome. We've always said that swift resolution to the war is in global interests, and the Strait of Hormuz specifically needs to be reopened.” PM’s spox won’t say whether he discussed this with US president in call on Sunday. But adds: “We’ve obviously been speaking for some time now that we want to see a swift resolution to the war. “The readout makes clear that they actually discussed the situation in the Middle East, and they discussed specifically the Strait of Hormuz.”
