Glad to see localities finally waking up and pulling the plug on this surveillance tech. Flock cameras promise to help keep our communities safe but in reality they may be used to support ICE in deportation efforts, monitor women's reproductive freedom, and create a centralized database of our personal information. It abuses our 4th Amendment rights and opens the door to our government monitoring people in ways it was never meant to. Big money surveillance tech and backdoor data sharing with the federal government is a recipe for abuse. ow.ly/tK5c50XNii7

Any process for selecting a new president should engage the Charlottesville community + address tough questions: how will UVA benefit all residents, not just the already wealthy and credentialed? How will UVA stop encroaching on 10th & Page, Fifeville, and Rose Hill?

The UVA Board of Visitors is in legal non-compliance with its required board composition. Yet it rushed through a last minute appointment of a new UVA president Why? To advance an ideological mission? To advance a growth/business strategy they want UVA to pursue?

Governments at any level should not implement mass surveillance technologies The problem is inherent to the technology itself. Surveillance capitalism should not be embraced by local governments

Information gathered by ALPRs can be used both by law enforcement agencies and private data aggregation companies such as Palantir This creates huge risks for misuse by the federal government, or state actors at any level, to surveil members of the public

Earlier this week, Charlottesville officially ended its use of ‘Flock cameras’ — automated license plate readers (ALPRs) that automatically capture photos & information about every vehicle that passes by their locations cvillerightnow.com/news/208802-ci…

Manufactured homes are a critical tool for affordable housing They can be built on permanent foundations at half the cost of traditional site-built homes But most localities ban new manufactured homes from getting placed in residential zoning districts
Alex Armlovich@aarmlovi

Today HUD updated its national building code! Governing factory-built homes on a permanent chassis, it's unique as the only national building code. Great news, it will allow: -4 units per structure (!) -Multistory designs -Better materials & layouts -Less red tape (AC waivers)

@mtgillikin Here is a copy of remarks I read yesterday (Aug 30) at the dedication of the "Gaston House" residence hall on Brandon Avenue. Ian Baucom subbed for President Ryan who was under the weather.

@mtgillikin Should Market Street Park + Court Square Park be like any other park in the U.S., or should there be some unique memorialization Memorialization could look like a lot of different things, not just a monument

@mtgillikin There doesn’t necessarily need to be any monument, but there are important Qs for City government: should 4th street remain fully open to vehicular traffic with no permanent space of reflection/memoralization? Swords into Plowshares will create new art, will city accept it?

The events of those days don’t define Charlottesville. But they shouldn’t be forgotten. And they continue to inspire collective, positive change in the aftermath of tragedy

It’s only a small gesture, but to me it’s clear the City should create a permanent memorial, together with survivors of August 11 and August 12, at 4th Street & the parks that spurred ‘Unite the Right’ in order to honor the events that changed history in Charlottesville

With the seven year anniversary of August 11 + August 12 passing, I reflect on — what has changed? What hasn’t changed? With each passing year, it feels as if the memory of those days slowly slips away from the collective consciousness of Charlottesville

Amazing! I'd love to see more efforts to empower mobile home park residents to purchase their parks. As one of the last sources of affordable housing, we should prioritize keeping mobile home parks out of the hands of private developers and vulture capitalists like Carlyle Group.
Michael Payne@MPayneCville

As of today, Habitat for Humanity’s counter-offer to purchase the Carlton Mobile Home Park was officially accepted This will prevent the displacement of the 66 families who live there while also allowing a resident-involved process to determine the future of the community
