Americans believe dozens of things that are not true. It bugs me. One of them is "widespread hunger" and "childhood hunger" caused by "poverty." It's a way to manipulate emotions. It's not true. The best, most wholesome foods are so cheap they are just about free. But low income people would mostly rather go to McDonald's or KFC.

Student Anna Villines saw a janitor pull an orange from the trash and she realized how much food was being wasted at school. She said, “It struck me that people were hungry in our own school, and here we were throwing away food that could be used.” She talked to the principal about donating untouched food to a local pantry. That, she learned, wasn’t possible. “He said it would be a violation of health regulations and could affect federal funding for school lunches." She then learned about a school in Africa where they had set up a community refrigerator where students could place uneaten food for others to take. A refrigerator was purchased by the school and now it is stocked daily by students who place their unopened fruit, milk, and packaged items inside instead of throwing them away. And by the end of most school days it is empty - people stopping by it to snag something to eat. “I feel comfort knowing that students in need are able to grab food on the go and nothing gets wasted.” Stories help us imagine ways to solve problems for the hungry in our own communities. You never know who is hungry who is sitting right beside you. Imagine the ways that our lives could shift towards meaning if we focused on serving one another rather than discounting and competing. Our youth deserve a life of meaning and it is stories of hope like this one that means we still have a chance to make an impact and change our ways of showing up.

@DjEtla1066 It’s kind of amazing in a way. Those were the first stories that I ever posted online. That was posted even before my real estate blog. I really need to get back to writing.

@Grumpy_Hoosier @MrPitbull07 She doesn’t look like she goes to a school where people are hungry. The reality is poor nutrition isn’t happening because of food scarcity, but because of lack of education and bad nutritional decisions.

@MrPitbull07 "It struck me that people were hungry in our own school..." Ugh. Americans are incredibly fat. No one is hungry. But I guess women like to imagine people are hungry. It taps into their emotions.

@DjEtla1066 Later in the story her sister arrives. She watches the same videos but it has a different effect. Her sister becomes dominant. The story was supposed to end with Emily being cast out, but my early readers expressed that they wanted one sister to dominate the other

@DjEtla1066 That was part of one of my early stories. It was called Emily’s Journal. The story was about a college student who had to take classes remotely because of Covid. She ultimately becomes a pet, and later a slave for one of her classmates who is sent by their professor

@Nemtastic1 "You can't have it both ways." Yes they can. They believe all sorts of contradictory stuff. It's like their superpower. They have no actual core beliefs--they'll argue one thing today and the opposite tomorrow.

The same people who tell us that "heritage Americans" aren't any more American than a first generation immigrant *also* want us to believe that a black American in 2025 deserves special status because of their ancestors' presence in America in 1825. You can't have it both ways.
