This is what I have been highlighting for the last 2–3 years: it feels unfair that a common salaried person pays full tax on their salary, while our judges pay comparatively nominal tax despite the current global ranking of our judiciary. At the very least, such reliefs and exemptions should be linked with measurable improvements in the performance and ranking of our courts worldwide. Further, @PseudoEconomist, the difference in the effective tax burden between a judge and a common salaried taxpayer is even larger than the figures you calculated. This is because many taxable perks enjoyed by judges are exempt, whereas similar benefits for ordinary salaried individuals are taxable. For example: For a common salaried employee, a company-provided vehicle is taxable depending on its usage. If we conservatively assume a vehicle worth 10 million PKR is provided to a judge and used for both official and personal purposes, then 5% of the vehicle’s cost (500,000 PKR) would normally be added to annual taxable income. -Judges receive 1,000 free electricity units per month. Assuming an average cost of 50 PKR per unit, this equals a monthly benefit of 50,000 PKR. For a common salaried individual, such a benefit would be taxable, meaning 600,000 PKR annually would be added to taxable income. -Around 200 litres of fuel per month are also exempt. For ordinary salaried taxpayers, fuel benefits are usually taxable unless strictly for official use. Assuming an average fuel price of 400 PKR per litre, this equals 80,000 PKR monthly, or 960,000 PKR annually. -Personal drivers, gardeners, and other government-provided staff are also benefits that would typically be treated as taxable for a common employee. While exact figures and no of servants/ drivers etc are unavailable, even assuming average salaries of 60,000 PKR per month would add another 720,000 PKR annually to taxable income. If all these benefits were included, they would amount to approximately 2,780,000 PKR in additional taxable income on which no tax is currently being paid. Assuming the highest slab rate of 35%, this translates to around 973,000 PKR annually (or about 81,000 PKR monthly) in tax exemptions and reliefs compared to what a common salaried individual would pay — on top of the exemptions on cash salaries already highlighted by @PseudoEconomist. Judges should absolutely receive respect, facilities, and reasonable benefits. However, such extraordinary exemptions should ideally come alongside stronger judicial performance, accountability, and improvement in our global rankings. x.com/i/status/20512…

As per the World Bank, in cash terms and relative to pre tax income, Pakistan's poorest 10% pay a greater share of income in taxes than the richest 10%. A judge earning Rs 690K/month pays just Rs 62K in income tax (effective tax rate of ~9%). A private sector employee on the same salary pays Rs 173K. That's ~180% more. A poor motorcyclist pays Rs 117/litre in petroleum levy, a form of indirect tax while a judge pays only 9% in direct income tax on his salary. No government has ever fixed this. And why would they? These are the same judges who help them win elections. Pakistan's tax system doesn't just favour the rich. It was designed to. (Salary breakup of a judge in the reply to this tweet.)

France gathered 400 Muslim scholars and beheaded them. In 1917 AD, during the occupation of Chad. In 1852, when France entered the city of Laghouat in Algeria, it killed two-thirds of its population in a single night and burned them alive. France occupied Algeria for 132 years. In the first 7 years after their arrival, the French eliminated 1 million Muslims, and in the last 7 years before their departure, they eliminated 1.5 million Muslims. The French historian Jacques Gorky estimated that the total number of Muslims killed in Algeria from France's arrival in 1830 to its departure in 1962 was 10 million. France occupied Tunisia for 75 years, Algeria for 132 years, Morocco for 44 years, and Mauritania for 60 years. When France entered Egypt during its famous campaign, French soldiers on horseback entered mosques and raped free women in front of their families. They drank wine in the mosques and turned them into stables for their horses. It is strange to see some people boasting about and defending French civilization, forgetting all its dark history. This is France; remind them of its history. 🔻 When France entered the city of Aghwat (Laghouat) in Algeria in 1852, it burned two-thirds of its inhabitants to death in just one night. 🔻 France conducted 17 nuclear tests in Algeria between 1960 and 1966, resulting in an unknown number of deaths estimated between 27,000 and 100,000 and the effects persist to this day. 🔻 When France left Algeria in 1962, it left behind 11 million landmines more than the total population of Algeria at the time. 🔻 France occupied Algeria for 132 years. In just the first seven years of their occupation, they massacred one million Muslims, and in the last seven years, they martyred another 1.5 million Muslims. 🔻 France is the fourth largest holder of gold reserves in the world, with 2,436 tons of gold stored at the Bank of France, even though France has no active gold mines. 🔻 In contrast, Mali one of the world's largest gold producers with 14 official gold mines has no gold reserves of its own. 🔻 Similarly, the Republic of Congo, which ranks seventh among gold-producing countries, also has no gold reserves in its central bank.

🇺🇸BREAKING: Someone placed a $920 million crude oil short at 3:40 AM. 70 minutes later Axios reported the US and Iran were close to a deal. Oil dropped 12%. The trade made $125 million in profit. Minutes after that Iran launched the “Persian Gulf Strait Authority” and oil surged 8%. $760 million placed before Trump’s last announcement. $920 million placed before this one. Every major announcement in this war has been front-run by someone who knew it was coming. What kind of war is this? This is more like a trading desk with an army. Never stop connecting the dots.
