Guy Gilbert

Bombay, 1885. In a courtroom, a 22-year-old woman listened as a man claimed he had a legal right to her. His name was Dadaji Bhikaji. According to the law, he was her husband. To her, however, he was nothing of the sort. Rukhmabai had been married at the age of eleven. The union had been arranged by her family, as was common for many girls in India at the time. After the wedding ceremony, she returned to live with her mother, expected to join her husband once she reached adulthood. But her life took a different path. After her stepfather's death, her mother married Dr. Sakharam Arjun, a progressive physician who believed in women's education. For the first time, Rukhmabai was given access to learning. She studied English, mathematics, and science, gaining an education that was exceptionally rare for a woman of her era. By the time she reached adulthood, she had made up her mind: she would not live with a man she had never chosen. Dadaji Bhikaji refused to accept her decision. In 1884, he filed a lawsuit seeking the restoration of his “conjugal rights,” asking the court to compel Rukhmabai to move in with him and fulfill the role of a wife. Her response was unequivocal. She did not recognize the marriage as valid. She had been a child, incapable of giving meaningful consent, and she regarded the man as a stranger. Her words caused outrage. In colonial India, child marriage was deeply entrenched in society and supported by long-standing traditions. Challenging the practice meant confronting social norms, religious authorities, and established customs. The case quickly became a national sensation. Newspapers across India and Britain reported on every development. Public opinion was sharply divided. Conservatives accused her of attacking tradition, while reformers saw her struggle as a fight for justice and personal freedom. Rukhmabai refused to remain silent. Writing under the pseudonym “A Hindoo Lady,” she published articles and letters in newspapers, condemning child marriage and criticizing a society that denied education to girls. She described the devastating impact that forced marriages had on the lives of young girls. One of her most famous letters, published in The Times of India in 1885, recounted how child marriage had affected her own life. The letter was reprinted widely and sparked debate far beyond India's borders. Yet public attention could not shield her from the law. In March 1887, the court delivered a harsh ruling. The judge ordered that Rukhmabai must either live with her husband or face six months in prison for contempt of court. Her answer came immediately. She would rather go to prison. The declaration shocked the public. A young woman willingly choosing imprisonment over submission to an unwanted marriage was almost unimaginable at the time. Reactions were swift and intense. Some newspapers attacked her relentlessly, while others rallied to her defense. The controversy reached the highest levels of the British colonial administration. Eventually, an out-of-court settlement was reached. Dadaji Bhikaji agreed to withdraw the case in exchange for financial compensation. Rukhmabai won the freedom she had fought so fiercely to protect. But her story did not end there. Her case had exposed a troubling reality: in India, the legal age of consent was only ten years old. Public pressure and reform campaigns helped bring about legislative change. In 1891, the age of consent was raised to twelve. Although still far too low by modern standards, it marked an important first step toward reform. Then came a new challenge. Determined to become a doctor, Rukhmabai pursued medical studies. After facing obstacles in India, she was admitted to the London School of Medicine for Women. With support from reformers and charitable organizations, she traveled to England to continue her education. She studied there for six years. In 1895, she returned to India as a qualified physician, becoming one of the country's first female doctors. The girl who had been forced into marriage at eleven had become a respected medical professional. For decades, she dedicated her life to treating women and children, improving women's healthcare, and advocating for girls' education. She never married again. When asked why, she reportedly replied with characteristic wit that she had already had enough experience of marriage to last a lifetime. Rukhmabai died in 1955 at the age of ninety-one, having witnessed profound changes in both India and the status of women. For many years, her name remained largely forgotten. Today, she is remembered as a pioneering figure whose courage helped pave the way for reforms in women's and children's rights. It all began in a courtroom, when a judge presented her with two choices: obey or go to prison. She chose freedom.

A father told his 23-year-old son to “man up.” Months later, he was standing at his son’s grave wishing he could take those words back. To him, his son looked lazy. He slept late. Delivered food for gig apps. Lived at home. Spent hours on his phone. The father came from a different America. At 24, he already had a factory job, a mortgage, and a family. So when his son said: “The economy is different now.” “The math doesn’t work anymore.” …he thought those were excuses. One evening, he found his son quietly eating cereal after finishing deliveries. The son looked exhausted. Not sleepy. Exhausted. “I’m trying, Dad,” he said softly. “I’m just so tired.” The father rolled his eyes. “Tired from what? Sitting in a car all day? You kids have everything handed to you.” The room went silent. Then the son said: “I’m sorry the math doesn’t work for me.” Before going downstairs, he hugged his father and whispered: “I won’t be a burden anymore.” The next morning, his room was spotless. Bed made. Phone on the pillow. A note waiting. His father discovered the truth too late: His son had applied to hundreds of jobs. Worked endless hours delivering food. Stopped taking medication after losing insurance. Was drowning silently under debt, rejection, and hopelessness. The note ended with these words: “You were right. The world is for the strong. And I don’t have any fight left.” He drove to a bridge and never came home. Later, the father admitted something heartbreaking: “I judged my son using rules from a world that no longer exists.” Back then: • Homes cost a few years’ salary • Jobs came with pensions • One income could support a family Today, many young people work harder than ever while feeling permanently stuck. And too often, exhaustion gets mistaken for laziness. Sometimes when someone says: “I’m tired…” What they really mean is: “I’m losing the fight to keep going.” Before judging someone for struggling in today’s world, listen first. You may be looking at someone fighting a battle you cannot see.

Albert Einstein and Hannah Arendt's 1948 letter to the New York Times: They saw the creation of a Jewish ethnostate in Palestine at the expense of its indigenous Muslim and Christian population as a profound injustice and moral catastrophe. Einstein and the other signatories explicitly compared Begin’s Herut (Freedom Party), born from the Irgun, to Nazis and Fascists, warning that their ideology of racial superiority and violent ethnic nationalism posed a grave danger to the moral and political future of the new state. - - - Full text of Einstein and Hannah Arendt's letter to the New York Times: TO THE EDITOR OF THE NEW YORK TIMES December 2, 1948 Among the most disturbing political phenomena of our time is the emergence in the newly created State of Israel of the “Freedom Party” (Tnuat Haherut), a political party closely akin in its organization, methods, political philosophy, and social appeal to the Nazi and Fascist parties. It was formed out of the membership and following of the former Irgun Zvai Leumi, a terrorist, right-wing, chauvinist organization in Palestine. The current visit of Menachem Begin, leader of this party, to the United States is obviously calculated to give the impression of American support for his party in the coming Israeli elections and to cement political ties with Zionist elements in the United States. Several Americans of national repute have lent their names to welcome his visit. It is inconceivable that those who oppose fascism throughout the world could condone, even by silence, the appearance of such a party in Israel. Within the Jewish community they have preached an admixture of ultra-nationalism, religious mysticism, and racial superiority. Like other fascist parties, they have been used to break strikes, and they have encouraged demoralization among labor. In their actions they have been marked by cruelty and contempt for human life. During the recent past, they have systematically terrorized the Arab population, attacked Jewish settlements, and sabotaged the rescue of displaced Jews from Europe. A shocking example was their behavior in the Arab village of Deir Yassin. This village, off the main roads and surrounded by Jewish lands, had taken no part in the war and had even fought off Arab bands that wanted to use it as their base. On April 9 (1948), terrorist bands attacked this peaceful village, which was not a military objective in the fighting, killed most of its inhabitants — 240 men, women, and children — and kept a few of them alive to parade through the streets of Jerusalem. Most of the Jewish community was horrified at the deed, and the Jewish Agency sent an apology to King Abdullah of Transjordan. But the terrorists, far from being ashamed of their act, were proud of it, widely publicized it, and invited foreign correspondents to view the corpses and the ravaged village. The Deir Yassin incident exemplifies the character and actions of the Freedom Party. Within the Jewish community they have attempted to institute a reign of terror, have beaten up Jews who opposed them, and have, by gangster methods, terrorized the population. It is inconceivable that those who oppose fascism throughout the world could condone, even by silence, the appearance of such a party in Israel. The undersigned therefore take this means of publicly presenting a warning to the American people concerning a danger to be found in the Freedom Party in Israel, a danger to which the leadership of Menachem Begin gives the greatest emphasis. (Signed): Albert Einstein, Hannah Arendt, Sidney Hook, Rabbi Jessurun Cardozo, Irma Lindheim, and 22 other Jewish scholars, writers, and public figures. (Published December 4, 1948, in The New York Times.)

Ok. We have a problem. For far too long, we have been borrowing from our children and happily dying, leaving them with a debt they didn't sign up for. We have convinced ourselves that it is for 'their own good'. And now it is no longer the exception. It has become the norm. As soon as some revenue stream is discovered, we take out a loan on it's future earnings - whether it's energy or transport or even liqour sales. So basically we're spending what that stream may provide in the next decade. Some of these loans are for multiple decades. Many of those taking out these loans will die meanwhile, as will the people who voted for them. The servicing of that debt will ALWAYS be more expensive than originally planned for, since excel sheet formulae..... And our kids will struggle to make ends meet - even if they're making millions. Mistakes from the past have brought us to this terrible economic position we find ourselves in today. Instead of making sweeping changes in the way we approach things, our nation has officially moved everything to 2047, citing some milestone year which means nothing really. Till then, we are supposed to shut up and bear with this colossal mismanagement. Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results is a definition of insanity. And supporting that insanity in the hope that some miracle will happen, and that our kids won't be burdened with the outcomes of our decisions, is derangement!! What we are doing is safely moving the dates to 20-30 years from now; to ensure that we are not around when responsibility comes knocking. 79 years of independence is more important than 100 years, since we are here now! We may not be economically doomed. But our kids are. And that's even worse.
