On this day in 1967: John Coltrane died of liver cancer at at Huntington Hospital on Long Island. He was 40. Coltrane's death surprised many in the music community who were unaware of his condition. Miles Davis said, "Coltrane's death shocked everyone, took everyone by surprise. I knew he hadn't looked too good... But I didn't know he was that sick—or even sick at all." John William Coltrane was a jazz saxophonist and composer. Coltrane's 1st recordings were made when he was a sailor. Working in the bebop and hard bop idioms early in his career, he helped pioneer the use of modes and was at the forefront of free jazz. He led at least 50 recording sessions and appeared on many albums by other musicians, including trumpeter Miles Davis and pianist Thelonious Monk. Over the course of his career, Coltrane's music took on an increasingly spiritual dimension, as exemplified on his most acclaimed albums A Love Supreme (1965) and Ascension (1966). Coltrane remains one of the most influential saxophonists in music history. He received numerous posthumous awards, including a Pulitzer Prize in 2007, and was canonized by the African Orthodox Church. His 2nd wife was pianist and harpist Alice Coltrane.
