"You checked a bag for a ONE DAY trip?!"
My boss exploded as he and the rest of our team left me stranded at baggage claim on my very first business trip.
One unlucky colleague stayed behind, forced to wait 30 minutes while I—still probably wearing the price tag on my brand-new JCPenney suit—struggled to hide my embarrassment.
That moment transformed me from a heavy packer into someone who's traveled the world for seven months with nothing but a 26-liter backpack.
Someone who's led four-day conferences with just a carry-on. And who gets a little obsessive about going uber-light.
I've even fallen in love with bikepacking—the ultimate test of minimalist travel. When everything you need must fit on your bike, you start doing things like cutting your toothbrush in half to save weight. (Yes, I realize this is not normal).
After years of refining my approach, here's what makes it into my everyday travel kit:
For work:
• A Macbook Air with a small 35 watt power charger
• A laptop stand (@theRoostStand) that elevates my laptop to eye level
• Wireless keyboard and trackpad
• @rodemics Wireless Pro 2 microphone for calls and professional recording
• AirPods Pro (worth every cent of their 90% markup)
For braving the elements:
Clothing follows one rule: wool whenever possible, ideally from @MacBishop4 via @WOOLandPRINCE:
• 2 short sleeve and 2 long sleeve shirts
• 4 pairs each of underwear and socks
• A pair of shorts and swim trunks
• 2 pairs of lightweight pants
• Puffy and rain jackets
• One versatile pair of tennis shoes
For staying fit:
Elastic resistance bands take up almost no space but provide endless workout possibilities. I like the set from Undersun Fitness.
For carrying it all:
My bag setup is simple but effective: a primary backpack (either the @minaal 35L or @theMysteryRanch Mission Rover 45L) plus a small shoulder bag for essentials on the plane.
My non-negotiable luxury item? A 12oz Carter mug from @FellowProducts. It's the perfect drink carrier that seals up but drinks like your favorite kitchen mug back home. Join @ecommercefuel and I’ll send you one for free in your welcome kit!
No affiliate links or shady stuff, just products I use and love.
What’s on your list that I missed?
(Picture is Annie and I with the carry-on bags for our RTW trip in 2011, apparently so long ago I could only find it in B&W.)
