"“Serenity has not met its goal of providing significant rent benefits to middle income renters,” Larkspur City Council members...wrote in their final report on Serenity." "They estimated that taxpayers had foregone $14 million in taxes over the prior five years."
Marin IJ@marinij

Serenity at Larkspur, a 342-apartment complex that was supposed to provide more affordable housing, has been acquired by an investment company. marinij.com/2026/04/09/lar…

@markasaurus @credealjunkie Mark are you suggesting on-site prevailing wage monitors & mandated pay stub reporting is a less-than-good system for expediting housing construction?

Heard a big San Francisco multifamily investor describe what it would take for developers to start building housing again: "Either the Unions take a 20% pay cut or the city pays developers $200,000 per unit to build." Not sure I agree, but captures the vibe.

We should be removing red tape in areas that are NOT FIRE ZONES. Newsom is right that CEQA and the coastal commission need to be limited in their ability to block development, but why should it only apply to rebuilding homes in high-fire-risk areas? Why not the whole state?
Gavin Newsom@GavinNewsom

NEW: Just issued an Executive Order that will allow victims of the SoCal fires to not get caught up in bureaucratic red tape and quickly rebuild their homes. We are also extending key price gouging protections to help make rebuilding more affordable.

We’re tracking some BIG WHOPPING NEWS! The SMART Train is heading north & will be soon be pulling into Healdsburg! The State of CA is proud to support this new project with an $81 million dollar investment to expand rail service & pedestrian paths from Windsor to Healdsburg. Grateful to the amazing partnership of SMART and their dedicated Board, the Sonoma County Transportation Authority, our federal partners, MTC and Governor Newsom.

As to why the Tong is selling... it may have to do with the folks who own homes next to the cemetery filing a lawsuit over the negative impact of the cemetary's +100' tall Eucalyptus trees. Where Burlingame fights to save old Eucalyptus trees, these neighbors, not so much.

An old Chinese Tong from SF just listed their cemetery in @DalyCityGov for sale, "Potential development opportunity" No mention of tombstones In 1898 the Tong solved the riddle of SF's burriel ban & SMC's ban on Chinese owned land: @smchistmuseum @DavidGallagher @JonMays

$ per door is a rough metric on these affordable deals, where there is so much range in unit size project-to-project Some projects are only studios & 1brs Some, like this deal, are in the 'large family' funding category, with more 2 & 3 bedrooms (41/69 are 2 & 3 bedrooms)
Marc Joffe@marcjoffe

Not to be outdone by San Francisco, San Mateo County is also building "affordable housing" for over one million dollars per unit. Eucalyptus Grove Apartments in Burlingame clocks in at a per unit cost of $1,069,992. smcgov.org/housing/news/n…

Beautiful development proposed in Lafayette, CA: - 7 stories - 90 homes on 1.2 acres - first new rental housing in town in 20+ years 😍 Only possible bc city’s housing element forced it to rezone. Policy change matters!

The New York Times recently featured our San Mateo County Navigation Center project in Redwood City. This campus is comprised of 240 units, which were constructed in only one year to provide timely shelter to the County’s unhoused population. xlconstruction.com/news/homeless-…

Wow a biased newspaper article without the numbers is not facts. Just because someone writes it down doesn’t mean it’s true. Listen to any of the City Council meeting where Council member Ann Schneider goes over the numbers of affordable units they built BEFORE the mandate which the city does not get credit for as well as those already built and in the pipeline. It is way above mandated. Their housing element was one of the 1sr passed on the Peninsula and the 3rd fastest growing city with a very small footprint of 3 sq miles. They also have a fact sheet about their affordable housing efforts on their website but I am done with you, you are a complete tool.
