India’s outward foreign travel remittance is estimated at around ₹2.5 lakh crore every year. One possible policy approach could be to impose a 30% tax on foreign travel-related remittances while simultaneously removing capital gains tax on equity investments.
Possible implications of such a policy:
1) Boost to domestic tourism and GDP
Higher taxation on foreign travel may encourage more people to travel within India instead. Increased domestic tourism can support hotels, airlines, transport, restaurants, local businesses, and employment generation, thereby contributing to GDP growth.
2)Higher tax revenue from overseas spending.If people still choose to travel abroad despite the higher tax, the government could generate substantial additional tax revenue. Since international travel is generally more common among higher-income groups, the tax burden would largely fall on affluent consumers.
3) Encouragement for investment in Indian equity markets
Removing capital gains tax on equities could incentivize greater participation in financial markets. This may increase household investment in productive assets, improve capital formation, and strengthen Indian businesses through higher market participation.

Shift in economic incentives
The broader idea behind the proposal is to discourage non-essential capital outflow through foreign travel while encouraging long-term wealth creation and domestic investment through equity markets.
