One of the largest impacts of climate change in West Virginia is and will be flooding. A warmer atmosphere holds more moisture. According to Nicolas Zegre, an associate professor of forest hydrology at West Virginia University, every one degree Fahrenheit of atmospheric warming leads to the atmosphere being able to hold 4% more water. In our rivers and valleys, and especially in places with mountaintop removal coal mining, heavy precipitation events can lead to disaster quickly. We need to restore and conserve our soils and forests and create more green spaces for numerous reasons, one of them being flood mitigation. We need to rethink our built environments with an eye toward flood resiliency, including our roads. Officeholders have a responsibility to listen to the science and act and plan accordingly. As your next U.S. Senator from West Virginia, I’ll do just that.
