Think tank wonks and pundits are wedded forever to the "grand game" of international relations. In many ways, this is a theory of world affairs tailored to the strengths and needs of the analyst classes. It is based on a capitalistic attempt to recreate the world, this time with full knowledge about divisions of power. A keen mind, trained in and attuned to the nuances of power, can forecast any trend and explain every development. When, after all, have men not been motivated by power? Considering Trump and his rhetoric (as well as Netanyahu and his policies), it seems as though this grand game is entering its final stages. Power cannot be separated from those who wield it. Trump is an obnoxious child emperor. Netanyahu and Israel are mad and anxious, cheapening life to endorse death. Tropes are important. Words are important. A humanity that transcends the formal is important. Faith is important, faith in humanity and civilization. Kindness and compassion are important, as are the stories we tell ourselves. All this to say that evil is not limited by the rejection of that which has been certified "good". Evil is also hollowness, a lack of belief in anything but naked power and interests. Such explanations are always correct and always lacking. Israel is as evil as it can be when a leading news site publishes Trump's latest threats and then says "Israel is expecting Iran to reject the ultimatum and is waiting for a green light from Washington". A green light for killing a civilization (in Trump's words). In my book, the indifference and the glee make for the greatest evIl. Listen to the words. Imagine yourself writing them, printing them, speaking them. This isn't about a pipeline through India or Netanyahu's political career. This is about chickens come home to roost.
