Not a day goes by that we don't hear about someone getting dropped by their insurer. Many insurers are now requiring @IBHS_org Wildfire Prepared Home. We help insurance agents and their clients navigate the process with a 5x higher success rate vs. DIY! hubs.ly/Q02NM2rf0

@Madronus @mattkahn1966 And if the insurers try to do this with price and availability, I really think we may end up with politically irresistible pressure to socialize the risk as Florida and many SE states have done with respect to wind peril.

An important adaptation example. The microeconomic question here is what is the extra cost (marginal cost) and expected benefits for property owners to comply with these self-protection steps? What role can social sanction and $ fines play in encouraging such investments?

South Lake takes wildfire resilience seriously. They learned a lesson from the Angora Fire. Then they did the work. Then that work paid enormous dividends during the Caldor Fire. And they aren’t stopping. kcra.com/article/south-…

@MichaelWWara @mattkahn1966 The only thing we've seen move the needle is insurers dropping the hammer (in a highly constrained insurance market with few alternatives). Even then, most decide to pay the FAIR Plan tax at $2-5K more per year to keep landscaping vs. investing in mitigation. (4 of X)

@MichaelWWara @mattkahn1966 Even with this, I'm skeptical: consider existing weed abatement ordinances. There's no incentive for govt to pursue because 1) judges and prosecutors will not prioritize (many judges dismiss to clear up docket), and 2) fines+costs to taxpayer aren't recouped until sale (3 of X)

@MichaelWWara @CAL_FIRE This seems like something that could be addressed through a more realistic calibration of the Reserve Pool in CARB's Forest Protocol, which in the 2015 standard was set at 2% if memory serves. Make it float and tie it to actual conditions to motivate project developers.

Just saw this referenced by @dog4climate and I strongly agree with @wildland_zko. Read the whole thread. I would just add that the most culpable actors are not the firms but rather the NGOs and governments that play along and refuse to learn from experience.

There is an interesting story to tell about land conservation, forestry, global carbon markets, and lands threatened by tonight's growth on the #ShellyFire, (captured by @ALERTCalifornia . 23:00 - 7/6/24) 1/x

Today we recognize wildland firefighters and their families for their dedication, hard work, and sacrifices to protect lives and communities. Also a good time to remind Congress to increase their pay and improve working conditions! #wildfire #NationalWildlandFirefighterDay

@mattkahn1966 Consider the populations of young people in South Asia and Africa requiring higher education. They will seek opportunities abroad or require significant local expansions. US institutions have an pportunity to grow by catering to these needs both domestically and internationally.

Who is bullish about the medium term future of U.S higher education? I see several "headwinds" . While I am an eternal optimist, I don't see any "tailwinds". Please push back here. I want to be wrong.

BREAKING: USC's postdoctoral scholars voted 93% in favor of forming a union, the USC Researchers and Fellows United-United Auto Workers announced in an email to the Daily Trojan Monday afternoon. The vote took place from June 20 to June 21 and had a 200-15 margin of victory.

Our hearts go out to the Ruidoso, NM community and the firefighters working hard to contain two major fires in challenging conditions. #Wildfire #SouthForkFire #SaltFire

UPDATE: State Forestry confirms 1,400 structures have been destroyed by the #Southforkfire and #saltfire. Together, the fires have burned more than 20,000 acres and are 0% contained. @KOB4 @GriffinRushton will be live in Roswell with an update at 10.

@kimmaicutler Also unclear how DICs helps reduce admitted policyholders' exposure to wildfire losses. CA FAIR Plan can charge higher but not actuarially sound premiums (bc CDI). Excess FAIR Plan losses are borne by admitted policyholders, so the rest of us are on the hook.

I don’t get this. What incentive does any insurer have to cover fire going forward if the state is saying they’re encouraging FAIR for fire plus a wraparound with a normal private insurer for everything else?
Steve Glazer@Steve_Glazer

On my Podcast Table Talk, Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara @ICRicardoLara called on insurance companies to follow State Farm’s new wraparound plan; keeping residents fully insured during this insurance crisis. Read more here: sd07.senate.ca.gov/press-release/…

“They are building themselves a shopping mart so they can go and get the groceries all the time,” said Kate Lundquist, co-director of the OAEC Water Institute. “And the result of that is you have these really resilient oases that won’t burn in a fire.” latimes.com/environment/st…
