The poison of tribalism is killing dreams in Kenya. Kevin Kiarie was not ignored because he lacked talent. He was ignored because some people sitting comfortably inside the State Department of Sports looked at his surname before they looked at his sweat, discipline and sacrifice. They reduced a young Kenyan fighter into a tribe. Into politics. Into hatred. Yet the same people had no shame pumping energy and attention into Majembe vs Mbavu, a circus sold as boxing while real talent was left abandoned. Hype was rewarded. Mediocrity was celebrated. Serious athletes were sidelined because of tribal calculations. That is how nations collapse. When excellence is sacrificed at the altar of tribal loyalty. Today I stand at JKIA not as a Kikuyu, not as a Kalenjin, not as a Luo or Luhya. I stand here as a Kenyan welcoming a fellow Kenyan who carried our flag with dignity while powerful people back home tried to reduce him to ethnicity. Sports must unite this country, not divide it. A punch in the ring has no tribe. A gold medal has no tribe. The Kenyan flag has no tribe. Any official using public offices to discriminate against athletes because of their communities is an enemy of national unity and a disgrace to the spirit of sports.
