Ultimately, Xabi Alonso will decide Enzo Fernandez's future. If he feels he can find suitable replacement, he will let him go, if not he will insist on keeping him.

But the likes of Palmer, Caicedo and Reece have shown that quality and didn't ask for what the club can't afford. A player can't be allowed to mess up that structure. It's not worth it. If he truly wants to stay, he will stay. Without Enzo, we will find another way to play to the strength of the existing players. One thing I have learnt in football is that culture of the club is more important than one player. PSG sacrificed Mbappe and got better. Alex Ferguson used to sell anyone that thought he was bigger than the club and got better. It depends on how you make most of the situation but playing to the tune of any player is sending a bad message to the entire squad. Just stick to the principles.

Sterling was already gone has a player when they signed him, and you can’t compare sterling and Enzo. Sterling got a huge check from us for being a big player at a different club and not with us. Enzo has been consistent with us for 4 seasons.

You can’t pay a player on a 7-year contract a huge salary not based on performances; otherwise, you’d have Sterling’s case where players sit and earn for nothing and prefer not to leave.

One of the reasons why clubs use a wage cap structure is to control the future. A player can be good today, and demand and get big wages.
Then, if he turns out not so good tomorrow, you have a problem like we had with Raheem Sterling. You can't predict or control the future. Anything can happen. The structure protects the club from the unknown.
Every player at this club knows our wage cap. So, if his agent turns up demanding more than that, which they know the club won't accept, it means they are indirectly pushing to leave to go and earn more elsewhere or because they no longer trust the project.
