Passed in 1799, the Logan Act makes it illegal for private American citizens to conduct unauthorized diplomacy with foreign governments when the intent is to influence that foreign government’s actions in disputes involving the United States. Key point: once a president leaves office, they are a private citizen. They no longer speak with the authority of the United States government. So the question is fair: Did Obama violate the Logan Act? It has been on the books for more than 225 years, yet it is almost never enforced. Thoughts? ⚖️🇺🇸
