Government sales weren’t enough, however, and the added difficulties with poor business and accounting management lead to the complete failure of the Patent Arms Manufacturing Company finally in 1843. Colt kept the patents.

Five shot Colt Pattersons were used in the Florida Indian wars, the Texas war with Mexico, and many battles with plains Indians. The US government bought some Patterson carbines as early as 1841, and both pistols and carbines in 1845. “Sixguns” (1961)

My grandad Anson Merrifield. After the Civil War, he was the first marshal of Hardin, MO who lived long enough to speak of. Straightened the town out with with his double barreled ten gauge. “Hell, I Was There” (1979)

I do not particularly care about cleaning cases fired with smokeless powder, as it is seldom necessary. I have reloaded sixgun cases fired more than fifty times with smokeless powder. “Sixguns” (1961)

Told Martin, who was visibly shaken, having taken a man’s life, if he had used a heavier round, he could’ve knocked him once in the shoulder and maybe not killed him. He agreed and came back with a 45. Years later I had heard that Martin got killed in a gunfight with and old classmate of mine. Never learned the details of that squabble.

The 32 barely made it through Martin’s notepad above his heart, landing in his pocket. Martin plugged all six 38 specials into the man’s chest. He died on the way to the hospital. They chose to bring him to the Catholic hospital that was father away than the other.

My police friend Martin had a Smith & Wesson in 38 special Told him it was great for grouse and Target, but too small for his job. That day he got into a shoot-out at a Chinese parlor being held up. The robber had a nickel plated 32 revolver. “Hell, I Was There” (1979)

Cases can be cleaned perfectly with the cyanide solution, but there is an element of danger to it unless great care is used, and I for one do not recommend it.

Also, they were often stored for several months without any cleaning, except the brushing out and slight oiling necessary to prevent their getting so gummed up with dirt and residue that they will no longer chamber in the dies or cylinder of the gun.

Owning the right patents since 1856, for years, S&W had a firm lead over competitors in the realm of cartridge revolvers Colt’s response for the time was the Theurs patent conversion kit. Theurs cartridges were loaded from the front, and not nearly as effective “Sixguns” (1961)

Other changes include stocks with more filler on the front strap behind the trigger guard for better grip with the weight on the second finger, and a wider hammer spur, 1/4” longer than the 1950.

The S&W 1955 Target model had an improved smoother DA than the 1950 Target model. The U type main spring also made it easier and faster to cock, helping in timed and rapid fire matches. The heavy ejector rod case and top rib gave it a barrel heavy balance. “Sixguns” (1961)
