𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗘𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗵𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗮𝗯𝗮𝗱 As temperatures soar, women and men in #constructionworkers face dehydration, fatigue, and lost wages from heat exposure. Mahila Housing Trust (MHT) piloted cooling jackets at sites like Amaraiwadi and Ashirwad Residency in Ahmedabad. Here's what Construction workers say: Sataben, a construction worker: "This cool jacket makes me feel so much more comfortable during work. I had to lift sand, cement, gravel, and other materials." Champaben, a construction worker: "I wear this cool jacket that gives us fresh air, keeps us cool during work, and prevents sweating! We take it off during lunch. It's very comfortable." Virjibhai, a mason: "I put it on at 9 AM and take it off for just half an hour at noon. It provides cool air and feels great-comfortable all day!" These jackets reduce temperature by 5-7°C, boosting comfort and productivity. MHT is scaling worker-centric solutions for heat-resilient communities. Through such efforts, let's advance practical solutions to build heat-resilient communities-especially for those most exposed to climate risks. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 "𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲-𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁" 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗱𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘂𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝗹𝘂𝗺𝘀? In the urban slums of Patna and Gaya, a goat is far more than livestock. It is a critical safety net in form of a "quick cash" asset that families sell to cover medical emergencies or seasonal income gaps. But climate change is turning these lifelines into liabilities. When a monsoon floods a slum or a “cold wave” hit or a heat wave strikes the ultra-poor don't just lose an animal; they lose an instant investment of ₹3,000–₹4,000. Our field report suggests that 25% livestock in urban slums died last year due to extreme weather & resulting health issues. Beside high mortality it also leads to reduced weight gain, poor health and reduced milk production, leading to reduction in family income. At Mahila Housing Trust (MHT), we believe that to protect livelihoods, we must build resilience from the ground up. In partnership with @brlps_jeevika and @BRACworld, we are piloting a holistic, climate-adaptive model designed to turn vulnerability into sustainable growth. The All-Weather "Goat Shade" Our technical solution addresses Bihar’s extreme seasonal swings with a compact, urban-ready design: -Monsoon Resilience: Raised platforms on sturdy stilts keep goats above floodwaters and mud, curbing the parasites and "foot rot" that thrive in damp city slums. -Heatwave Protection: Specialized "cool-roof" systems using natural thatch and reflective insulation drop internal temperatures significantly, preventing heat stress during scorching summers. -Winter Shielding: Fully enclosed walls with high-performance insulation and Ceramic Heat Emitter Lamps block freezing winds, slashing hypothermia-related deaths. Health & Nutrition Shield Partnering with Aga Khan Foundation India, our care package goes beyond roofs to make goat assets thrive. Key Components: -Precision Nutrition: Train families in Azolla cultivation—high-protein fern cuts fodder costs 30%, year-round. -Proactive Health: Routine vaccines/deworming prevent pneumonia, PPR outbreaks. -Growth Monitoring: Simple tools track weight/health for early detection, optimal sales. True climate adaptation isn't just about big infrastructure, it’s about protecting the smallest, most vital assets of the urban poor. How can we better integrate livestock protection into urban climate policy? Let’s discuss in the comments. #MHTImpact #ClimateAction #HeatResilience #Livelihoods #Bihar #UrbanPoor #WomenEmpowerment #BeatingtheHeat @axisfoundation | @BMGFIndia | @NULM_MoHUA | @SirazHirani | @Bijalb_15 | | @ndmaindia @cdri_world @tatatrusts

Jalgaon Slum Gets #CoolRoofs for Heat Relief A cool roofs project launched in Laxmi Nagar slum-a heat-vulnerable area in Jalgaon ward. The event united the additional commissioner, Smt. Shobha Baviskar, the sectional engineer from the Environment Department and local community women. Cool roofs, coated with solar-reflective white paint, reduce indoor temperatures by 2-5°C, easing heat stress and cutting electricity costs for urban poor households. This season, 100 slum houses will get the cool roof treatment with solar reflective white paint. Mahila Housing Trust (MHT) is developing the Jalgaon Climate Action Plan (CAP) with Jalgaon Municipal Corporation, which is nearing rollout and helps by providing a structured roadmap for timely, coordinated heat mitigation efforts—integrating cool roofs, community training, and policy advocacy to build lasting urban resilience. #CoolRoofs #ClimateAction #JalgaonCAP #HeatResilience #UrbanCooling #WomenEmpowerment #SustainableCities @ndmaindia | @HSBC_IN | @Misereor @torrontoun @swachhjalgaon45 @AmalnerMCI @UofT @moefcc @CMOMaharashtra

Protecting #ConstructionWorkers from Rising #HeatRisks As temperatures rise, construction workers are among the most affected-especially in cities like Ahmedabad, where work continues even under extreme heat, exposing workers, particularly women, to significant risk. Women construction workers often spend long hours carrying heavy loads, mixing concrete, and working on exposed sites with little or no shade. During extreme heat, they face multiple challenges, including dehydration, fatigue, dizziness, heat exhaustion, and in severe cases, heatstroke. The combination of intense physical labour, direct sun exposure, and limited access to rest, water, or cooling further worsens their health and working conditions. Extreme heat also impacts their health, productivity and income. Frequent breaks due to exhaustion, reduced physical capacity, and health issues can lead to loss of daily wages—making them even more vulnerable. To address these challenges, Mahila Housing Trust (MHT) has introduced a pilot of ‘Cooling Jackets’ for construction workers in Ahmedabad at the Amaraiwadi, Ashirwad Residency, Gujarat Housing Board Redevelopment Housing site. As part of this initiative, cooling jackets have been provided on a demonstration basis to 4 male and female construction workers working during peak heat hours. Feedback is being collected from both workers and contractors to assess comfort, usability, and effectiveness. Cool Jacket Features: 🔹 Helps reduce temperature by 5–7°C 🔹 Lightweight, durable, and suitable for outdoor work 🔹 Supports better comfort and productivity during extreme heat hours This initiative aims to provide immediate relief while exploring scalable solutions to protect construction workers’ health, safety, and livelihoods. Through such efforts, MHT continues to advance practical, worker-centric solutions to build more heat-resilient communities-especially for those most exposed to climate risks. @ndmaindia @Bijalb_15 | @cdri_world #HeatAction #ClimateResilience #WomenWorkers #ConstructionWorkers #Ahmedabad #MHT #MHTImpact #CoolJacket #ExtremeHeat | @AmdavadAMC

𝗖𝗼𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲: 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗵𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗮𝗯𝗮𝗱’𝘀 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗘𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝘁 With Ahmedabad already hitting 41°C in March, traffic police on the ground face growing dangers from extreme heat. To address this, Mahila Housing Trust (MHT), in collaboration with 𝗔𝗵𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗮𝗯𝗮𝗱 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗲, has launched a pilot of Cool Jackets at Pakwan Crossroads, Ahmedabad. For the pilot, traffic police are testing the cooling jackets. Authorities say it will gauge how well the gear reduces heat stress and improves on-duty conditions. 𝗦𝗵𝗿𝗶 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗮𝗴 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗹, 𝗗𝗖𝗣 (𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗔𝗱𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻), shares: "Ahmedabad is getting hotter. To protect our on-duty personnel from the heat, we've collaborated with MHT to provide cooling jackets to the traffic police personnel. Continuous airflow circulates across the torso, neck, and underarms, speeding up sweat evaporation—your body's natural cooling mechanism. This boosts evaporative cooling, forming a microclimate inside the jacket that feels several degrees cooler than ambient temperatures. The jackets use lightweight, high-density polyester blends to efficiently trap and direct airflow while staying breathable. Elastic cuffs and adjustable waistbands seal in the cool air, enhancing the effect. Features of Cool Jacket: ✔️ Reduces body temperature by 5–7°C ✔️ Designed for long hours of outdoor duty ✔️ Improves comfort, safety, and productivity This initiative under the Ahmedabad Heat Action Plan highlights how innovation can protect frontline workers from rising heat risks.
