Since 1988, people in polygamous marriages overseas have not been allowed to bring additional wives to the UK through the spouse visa route, and Universal Credit does not recognise polygamous households in the benefits system. There are fewer than 10 legacy cases still recognised from claims made decades ago, when polygamy was previously permitted. This was even clarified while the Conservatives were in government by the then Lords Spokesperson for the Department for Education (Higher Education). The Tories had 14 years in power to change the rules if they believed it was a serious issue, but they didn’t.
