I wanted to work on some clearing principles with our defense like handling pressure, finding/creating space, communication & deceptive stick work against overly aggressive riders. I also wanted to keep wear & tear low. We tried a 6v5 keep away tag variation in the box. Helmets/gloves only. Taggers had small pool noodles & needed to tag/check the ball carrier’s stick or a glove — only a glove in contact with the stick counted. This tag/keep away hybrid game created so many interesting opportunities for the defenders to navigate pressure riding while learning to bait riders into chasing their stick. Using pool noodles instead of sticks allowed for way more confidence/creativity with the ball. Far less panic passing. Clearly seemed to help guys unlock different solutions. Lots of face dodging, dog walking, toe dragging, shovel passing & other deceptive/creative stick handling emerged. Finding ways to meaningfully simulate pressure in a low contact environment not only makes your stick work contextual & variable, it allows you to do a lot of it. Short clip:

Weird. The country that has far fewer players, spending way less money to play, and plays relatively little field lacrosse has yet again won a field lacrosse game on the highest stage. Maybe if we add a few more club tournaments to the schedule we can turn things around.
