Topanga residents: take part in a critical wildfire preparedness effort. The Topanga Evacuation Drill will take place on Saturday, April 18 from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM, giving residents an opportunity to practice evacuation procedures in one of the most high-risk wildfire areas in Los Angeles County. With narrow, winding roads and dense vegetation, early preparation is essential. Before the drill, residents are encouraged to attend an informational Zoom meeting on March 24, 2026. Register or learn more at tcep.org/emergencystatus. The drill begins with a test Alert LA County message at 9:00 AM. Check in at the staging area at King Gillette Ranch, 26800 Mulholland Highway, Calabasas. Topanga Canyon Blvd will remain open during the drill. This community-wide exercise helps first responders refine emergency plans based on real participation and feedback. On-site resources and emergency information will also be available. This event is hosted by Supervisor Lindsey P. Horvath, LA County Fire and Sheriff’s Departments, the Office of Emergency Management, TCEP, and CHP. Pile Burn for Wildfire Safety in Topanga Canyon Postponed Due to Weather Conditions The planned pile burn scheduled for April 17, in the northern Topanga Canyon area by LA County Fire Department and MRCA has been postponed for safety due to weather conditions (low humidity, windy). A confirmed date and time for the pile burn later this month, pending suitable weather and air quality conditions, will be announced at least 72 hours in advance. This project remains part of ongoing wildfire risk reduction efforts led by the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority (MRCA). What to expect when the burn is rescheduled: • Smoke may be visible in Topanga Canyon and surrounding areas • Sensitive individuals should be aware of potential lingering smoke in low-lying areas • Minor traffic delays or reduced visibility may occur near the burn area This is a controlled burn conducted by trained fire personnel, with crews on-site to monitor conditions and ensure the fire remains contained. The project is targeted and limited in scope, focusing on already disturbed material to reduce fire risk while minimizing impacts to the surrounding environment. Additional Information: Project details: mrca.ca.gov/statewide-crit… Air quality: airnow.gov Smoke safety: publichealth.lacounty.gov/eh/safety/pres… Track updates: app.watchduty.org For questions, contact: mrcafireprevention@mrca.ca.gov

Mayor Pro Tem Steve Uhring was proud to join Supervisor Lindsey Horvath, LA County Public Works Director Mark Pestrella, and LA County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone on April 1 to break ground on the Carbon Canyon Water Main and Pump Station Project. The project is an important step in Malibu’s recovery and long-term wildfire resilience. It will replace nearly 7,000 feet of aging water main with a larger pipeline that meets current fire flow standards, along with pump station upgrades to improve pressure, reliability, and performance. This $14 million effort is part of a broader $250 million investment to modernize Waterworks District 29, helping homeowners rebuild and meet modern fire safety standards. Over the next five years, additional projects will further strengthen water infrastructure across Malibu and the Santa Monica Mountains. Construction is underway and expected to be completed in December 2027. Thank you to our community for your patience as we build a stronger, safer Malibu. City and County Agencies Crack Down on Illegal Food Trucks In response to longstanding complaints from residents, the City is actively coordinating with partner agencies to ensure compliance with the Municipal Code and Los Angeles County business licensing and food vending requirements. On March 23, the City’s Public Safety, Code Enforcement, and Parking Enforcement teams conducted a multi-agency food truck enforcement operation with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, and the Los Angeles County Treasurer and Tax Collector. Enforcement focused on areas that have recently seen increased food truck activity, including Cavaleri Road, Winding Way Road, Point Dume, and Pacific Coast Highway. Multiple food trucks were contacted, resulting in citations and orders to cease operations due to public health violations.

CA TSUNAMI AWARENESS WEEK MARCH 21 - 29 California’s 800-mile Pacific coastline is one of the state’s greatest assets and one of its most significant tsunami risks. That’s why every year, California dedicates a full week to tsunami awareness and preparedness. This year’s Tsunami Preparedness Week, from March 21-March 29, is a statewide call to action for individuals, families, schools, and communities to learn their risk, practice their response, and register their preparedness activities at tsunamizone.org/California. TSUNAMI SAFETY TIPS • Know your zone and evacuation routes ahead of time • If you feel strong shaking, move to higher ground immediately • Watch for warning signs: ocean roar or water suddenly receding/rising • Evacuate on foot if possible—roads may be blocked • Go to high ground/inland and stay until officials say it’s safe • Keep a go-bag ready for quick evacuation • Monitor official alerts and follow instructions • Do not return early—multiple waves can occur Learn your evacuation routes, and get preparedness tips and more at tsunamizone.org.

Heads up, Malibu! Dangerous beach conditions are expected now through Wednesday (March 18) evening, as a Beach Hazards Statement from the National Weather Service remains in effect for the Malibu Coast due to elevated surf creating dangerous rip currents and breaking waves. These conditions increase the risk of ocean drowning. Rip currents can quickly pull swimmers and surfers out to sea, and powerful waves can wash people off beaches and rocks or even capsize small boats near shore. Officials advise staying out of the water due to hazardous conditions, or remaining close to occupied lifeguard towers. Stay off the rocks and stay safe, Malibu!

The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for the region, including Malibu, in effect until 8 PM Friday, with temperatures of 85–95°F expected. While Malibu’s coast may be somewhat cooler, mountain and foothill areas—including the Santa Monica Mountains—will be much hotter, and warm overnight temperatures will increase the heat risk. There is a high risk of heat illness for sensitive groups, including young children, older adults, people without air conditioning, and those active outdoors. Safety Tips: • Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated • Stay in air-conditioned spaces when possible • Avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day • Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing • Check on relatives, neighbors, and those who may be vulnerable • Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke and take action immediately Weather updates: weather.gov/lox/ For more heat safety tips and local cooling centers, visit ready.lacounty.gov/heat Stay safe, Malibu!
