There is a bee that builds tiny homes out of flower petals.
While bees are often known for living in busy colonies, some prefer a solitary life. One remarkable species, Osmia avosetta, has developed a beautiful way to protect its young—without the help of a hive.
Instead of working with others, a single female takes on the task alone.
Over the course of a day or two, she carefully gathers colourful flower petals, cutting each one with precision before carrying it back to her nest. These nests are usually hidden in small burrows, safe from the outside world.
Layer by layer, she arranges the petals into a delicate structure. Between each layer, she adds a thin coating of mud, strengthening the nest and helping to protect what’s inside.
Once the structure is complete, she lays a single egg within and seals the nest entirely.
Days later, the egg hatches into a larva, which spins a cocoon inside its petal-wrapped home, safe, hidden, and perfectly protected.
A tiny architect… building one of nature’s most beautiful and secure nurseries for the children she won’t meet
