the essence of what makes that artwork what it is does not solely exist inside the notes. same way, the essence of what makes the Monet a work of art does not exist solely in those specific daubs of color. This is why “my kid could paint that” is also bullshit

I have only a predigested, secondary sense of what it was like to exist in the place/time when it was originally performed & more importantly WHY it was performed that way & not another way. A note-for-note cover would not be performed w that intent but the intent of duplication

just today in fact a story I worked on & sweated over ... some Facebook AI slop news-influencer account fed it to an LLM which regurgitated a poor version of it into people's feeds. My labor was used to train a machine attempting to put me out of work. I have no recourse for this
