So can shank really take on Mihawk in a fight as he used to?
You see, when Shanks visit Whitebeard in Chapter 434 , the old Emperor reminisce about the legendary duels between Shanks and Mihawk, stating that their clash used to ring across the Grand Line.
Whitebeard specifically notes his shock that a man of Shanks' caliber came back from the East Blue missing an arm.
This tells us two major things:
1. Their famous rivalries happened before Shanks lost his arm.
2. Shanks was already exceptionally powerful back then, but he wasn't an Emperor yet.
In Chapter 1, Shanks sacrifices his left arm to the Lord of the Coast to save young Luffy.
According to One Piece timeline details confirmed throughout the arcs (and summarized during the Reverie bounty reveals in Chapter 957), Shanks only became one of the Four Emperors (Four Emperors / Yonko) roughly six years after losing his arm.
If losing his arm truly crippled his combat ability, he wouldn't have been able to climb to the absolute apex of the pirate world, matching the physical monstrosities of Kaido and Big Mom.
The interactions between the two characters show that Shanks doesn't feel outclassed at all.
Take a good look at it;
Shanks: "Are you here to settle the score?"
Mihawk: "I have no interest in fighting a one-armed man."
The Netflix adaptation made it even funny;
Shanks: (Grinning) "I could still take you. Even with one arm tied behind my back.
Mihawkโs refusal isn't because Shanks is a pushover; it's a matter of personal pride. Shanks' dominant hand was his left hand. For a purist swordsman like Mihawk, defeating a rival who has to use his non-dominant hand offers zero satisfaction. If Mihawk wins, he beat a handicapped man; if he loses, he lost to a one-armed man. It is a lose-lose scenario for the World's Strongest Swordsman.
While Mihawk retains the title of the world's most skilled swordsman (Chapter 1058), Shanks compensates with some of the most ridiculous Haki feats in the entire series.
In Chapter 1055, Shanks unleashes a blast of Conqueror's Haki from miles away outside Wano, completely paralyzing and terrifying Marine Admiral Greenbull.
In Chapter 1079, Shanks completely deletes Eustass Kid a pirate with a 3-billion-berry bounty who helped defeat Big Mom in a single, devastating one-handed strike called Kamusari (Divine Departure).
So yeah, Shanks can confidently take on anyone because a sword duel in the upper echelons of One Piece isn't just about form or having two hands on the hiltโit is a battle of willpower and Haki.
That's all for this one.

@Blueblade131 @Mangaic2 If you actually read Horikoshi interview he lists the characters that were gonna be expanded on. Iida wasn't in that list but Ochako however was there.
