A mixture conifer species suited to a site including Sitka spruce, Douglas fir, Western red cedar, Norway spruce, Scots pine and European larch. Trees are planted in groups. Hardwoods mixed through also with groups of oak and others

Joking aside, this one is key: too often native (or even alternative) species are included in a completely tokenistic way, reflecting 'regulatory' limits rather than opportunities & constraints on the ground.

Here is a good example - policymakers' simplistic assumption = native trees are good, so they obligate a minimum percentage of them in schemes. Result = A standard spruce monoculture with a window dressing of native trees to tick the box.

@hometree__ The grant system also supports planting mixed diverse native woodland and diverse conifer/broadleaf mixtures. When landowners understand the risks involved they are unlikely to plant monocultures. We need to keep educating them but equally farmers need to inform themselves!

@rayofoghlu Great ccf project to transition into a mixed woodland and eventually a semi natural one.
Depending on the soil types you could have a whole range of different woodlands. And of course removal on peats if considered appropriate

@DawsonKristo @pippopotamus We planted an oak woodland there. Mixed in birch, cherry, cedar, sweet chestnut and others. we included some of those resistant elms through it. It's a beautiful site

I could treat it with Osmo oil and it would hold its colour but its too much work!

@ShaneMcAuliffe1 @rayofoghlu Native woodland FT1 was already eligible on certain peat and organo-mineral soils. The clarification today was agroforestry FT8 using appropriate native species is also eligible on these soils.. its a welcome outcome

This "plant your wet ground/plant the bog" mentality needs to move on.
Whilst not always the case, these bits of ground are already rich in biodiversity. Right now flag iris is coming through. It will be followed by willow herb, cuckoo flower and ragged robin.

@ManusCrowley @DawsonKristo @St0neP1ne I found Cara is an ok roaster but doesn't take on colour and falls to pieces if boiled. Stored in the ground well. Didn't produce much but that could be our clay soil, not great for spuds

About 10 of 40 bulbs of garlic I saved from last year now damp and moldy 😣. Kept in warmest, driest room. Bummer. Still, some cloves ok to make kale pesto + kale from @JennyMcNally7. @mickkellygrows best storage thoughts?
