Gerard Martin is one of my favorite players in the team currently. Unlike the rest of you, when Inigo Martinez's absence was looking like it was going to hurt, I was among those that suggested we try Gerard Martin in the LCB position. I had already seen the potential, he is a good 1v1 defender and since he lacked pace but had the height and physique, LCB only made the most sense.

Yesterday, I posted a tweet asking about the idea of including Martin in a potential Bastoni deal. I expected most people to disagree, but not to this extent. We’re talking about 90–95% of the replies being against it. Some people were even annoyed that I asked the question in the first place, calling it a ridiculous idea. And it made me think, if I had asked the same question at the start of the season or even midway through last season, I’m pretty sure the response would’ve been completely different. If i told you back then that people will refuse including Gerard Martin in a deal to bring Bastoni, you would call me mad. Honestly, the way Martin has managed to win people over and earn that level of respect in such a short time is really admirable.

I’m really not on board with including Martín in a Bastoni deal. Beyond needing a leader at the back, our issue is also depth, and selling a reliable, always-available defender makes no sense. Martín can cover both CB and LB, accepts a secondary role, and is on low wages. That kind of profile is valuable for squad balance, even if a new CB comes in. If the goal is to offload defenders, it makes far more sense to look at Araújo or Christensen. Both have had availability issues and are on significantly higher wages. Keeping those two while selling Martín isn’t just questionable from a sporting perspective, it’s also unfair given what each profile actually brings to the squad.

Exactly and that is why it's foolishness. This very charity is unnecessary. If it's a matter of next of kin, adopt him a child and hire a nanny to care for the child.
