#Throwback Early 80s. Let me tell Ama2K a little bit of lived history. Back in the early 80s there was a spot called Gremlin Drive-In Restaurant, located just before Newlands Shopping Centre,Harare Zimbabwe when you were coming from town. Today the place is widely known as Kebab Centre or Pakebab , even though, as far as I can remember, pasina kana one kebab zvaro. 😅 hajahahaha,noise chete! Anyway, I digress. Gremlin was a neat little spala where you could drive in, place your order through an intercom without leaving the car, and your graze would be brought right to the window. In 1982 I was a first-year apprentice electrician at Circle Cement Limited. I had no car of my own yet, but every now and then I’d borrow my sister Stella’s ride ,either her hubby, Isaih Bingwa's Citroën GS Club or her Mazda 323 , and take a date out for a late-afternoon graze. The plan was simple, pull into Gremlin, order something decent, then cruise over to the legendary Rainbow Drive‑In Cinema along Mutare Road ,around where Jaggers Wholesale used to stand in Msasa , and continue serenading the lucky date while “watching” a movie. Those were the days. I had class, smelt great, dressed sharp… and if you ask a few ladies from back then, they’ll tell you I wasn’t too bad looking either. 😅😜😎 Gremlin’s menu was extensive, as you can see from this old one. My personal favourite was the steak and egg roll. This particular menu might actually be from earlier , maybe 1979 or 1981 , because I clearly remember paying about $1.15 with a drink, which was already up from the 35 cents shown here. For a bit of context, as a first-year apprentice I took home $65.79 a week after deductions for tax and tools. Expenses looked something like this: Rent at 24 Cherlynn Court along what was then Mazoe/Montague (now Josiah Chinamano Avenue) $60 a month. ZESA electricity . $12 PTC phone bill . $14 So basically two weeks’ wages went straight to the basics, before even thinking about groceries. 😅 Which means paying a dollar-something for a steak roll wasn’t quite the bargain it might look like today. Another joint I really liked was a small burger spot at the corner of Leopold Takawira (then Moffat Street) and Samora Machel Avenue (then Jameson Avenue), opposite today’s Megawatt House, on Job Kadengu's Jobs Car Sales plot. That little brick building served some seriously sumptuous burgers. Other lakker spalas from those days included Dagwoods, and Sunflower, famous for its crispy rotisserie chicken located where Karigamombe Centre now stands on Sam’s Drag , as we affectionately called Samora Machel Avenue.
