@StuartWheeler28 @NewOrder_TV I was studying at Leeds when I attended a lecture he gave to a very small group. My professors seemed to be in awe of him back then.

@NewOrder_TV @MappingMarcus I am 55. When i was in my teens I was fortunate to have studied Russian politics and government at Kent and been taught by Richard Sakwa. He was an incredible inspirational teacher at a time when the Soviet system was crumbling. I still get a thrill each time I see him interviewed

New Order with Afshin Rattansi
Prof. Richard Sakwa on Being Detained by UK Police at Heathrow Airport: ‘I have nothing to hide. My views are open out there. I’m not going to be INTIMIDATED if anybody else asks me to speak.’ ‘The detention is under the 2019 Counter-terrorism Act, and they’re allowed to hold you for up to six hours without charge. And there was a peculiar quirk of this, or feature of this law, is that if you say no comment and refuse to answer a question, it is taken as an indication of guilt. So they can immediately arrest you if you say no comment or refuse to answer a question. In other words, this goes against the fundamental principles of British common law, where you are presumed to be innocent rather than guilty until proven guilty. It’s an astonishing thing. They did four hours of questioning, it was a fishing expedition. And of course I have nothing to hide. My views are open out there. I’m very willing to debate with anyone. Even coming on this TV show carries a certain element of jeopardy, let me put it this way. But I’m not going to be intimidated if anybody else asks me to speak.’ —Prof. Richard Sakwa, Emeritus Professor of Politics at the University of Kent and author of The Putin Paradox, joins us for Sunday’s season finale episode of New Order, to discuss Europe’s increasing irrelevance in the multipolar world, the Russia-NATO proxy war in Ukraine, and much more. Reading this. As always, Sakwa delivers a magisterial and balanced account. He’s easily the best Anglophone expert on this subject. A recent publication that, amazingly, hasn’t appeared once on my newsfeed but should as it’s important The Russo-Ukrainian War: Follies of Empire a.co/d/06YFvelw

@1874TheLions Just need Roma to return the Malen favour and let us pay for him at the end of the season so we have funds for other players as well.

Aston Villa are set to open formal talks with Roma for Matias Soule 🇦🇷 The 23-year-old winger, valued at around £35m, has been compared to prime Jack Grealish thanks to his dribbling ability, creativity and attacking output. Unai Emery could be building something special at Villa Park 👀 #AVFC #AstonVilla #PremierLeague #SerieA #MatiasSoule #TransferNews #UTV

@marshallavfc If Villa don't finish 5th ? Not sure I get that. If we finish 4th or 5th, and win EL, CL will be top 6.

If we win Wednesday and City win today the European race is going be nuts on the final day. 8th will be Europe, 6th could be CL. It will be alot clearer on Wednesday If Villa win on Wednesday, Finish 5th and City win the FA Cup Top 6 - Champions League 7th - Europa League 8th - Conference League If City win the Cup and Villa dont finish 5th and win the EL Top 5 - Champions League 6th - Europa League 7th - Europa League 8th - Conference League #avfc

@ArcherHarper6 @TheDuranReal I think the Russian perspective is that the EU lacks the natural resources to militarise and time is running out before their population rise up. The main concern seems to be the increasing likelihood an EU state uses a dirty bomb to cause mass casualties.

@TheDuranReal Well the EU weapons factories might have to factor the likelihood of a Russian missile? I don't think the Russian political class can wait for EU to militarise and further attack Russian civilians and infrastructure.

Europe’s leaders spent decades dismantling industry, outsourcing security to Washington, and impoverishing their own populations in the name of European values. Now suddenly there are endless billions for weapons, rearmament, and a permanent war economy. No money for farmers. No money for energy. No money for industry. But unlimited money for NATO. Europe is not defending itself. It is sacrificing itself.

@MappingMarcus @itsmeagain4126 @Kathleen_Tyson_ @MFA_China @SpoxCHN_MaoNing That was Kim greeting Xi at the Pyong Yang Airport in North Korea when Xi visited NK. Not the other way round. Xi did greet Kim at the train station but that's different - NK is the one and only treaty ally of China; it's reciprocal ; Kim probably requested that.

@Kathleen_Tyson_ @MFA_China @SpoxCHN_MaoNing Story from here is that it's a routine visit, not a major state one, so no excess pageantry. Quite interesting messaging if so: routine working meeting between the two major Eurasian powers.

@Kathleen_Tyson_ @MFA_China @SpoxCHN_MaoNing ...I mean Xi has never done so since he became the President of China. He greeted Obama at the airport when he was still VP but not as President.

@thesiriusreport We should also recall that Trump was originally due to visit in March but chaotically postponed until now. Likely that Putin's visit was agreed well in advance and is merely being followed through on now. Not everything revolves around what the US does, does it?

@DroidAgent @jaccocharite It was done to civilians. Collective responsibility is not something civilised nations should use as an excuse to murder civilians. The bombing of Dresden is not something Britain should be proid of.

They killed 27 million Soviets, 18 million of them civilians and you complain about a few cities? 7000 they destroyed in Russia, Belarus and Ukraine. They drained the blood of children until death to give to their soldiers and you complain about houses?

@jaccocharite For sure, looking at it with today's eyes. But morals predate treaties and firebombing a civilian city to terrorise a population is a crime at any time.

@MappingMarcus There were no treaties concerning civilians before the Geneva convention of 1949. So no it was not a warcrime. All treaties before 1949 were solely focused on soldiers, pows and alike. You are looking at the bombing with eyes of today, hindsight is not a metric

"We have indisputable evidence that Ghaddafi is giving his troops Viagra so they can mass rape girls and babies. We need to bomb them now!" *few months later as Libya has been bombed* "Yeah we made up that Viagra mass rape stuff. Anyway, Israel has the right to defend itself."

@RS73448285 @BBCWorld Yes, because supporting the sovereignty of a free nation and the rights of civilians not to be murdered by a dictator in their beds is hard. If you are against support for Ukraine, then you are in favour of wars of aggression, attacks on schools and apartments, and kidnapping. 👍
