From groundbreaking bisexual polyamory to jeeps full of muscle men with crabs, come celebrate John Schlesinger's queer legacy in a joyful and irreverent #BFIFlare talk (by me!), featuring rare glimpses into several films the director wasn't allowed to make:whatson.bfi.org.uk/flare/Online/d…

A wee archival highlight from my BFI Flare talk yesterday - John Schlesinger reveals how Laurence Olivier inadvertently ended up making Marathon Man less gay:

(Really good of The Guardian to use this picture where Schlesinger looks EXACTLY like my dad. Gonna try not to unpack that one too much lol)

It's live!! The John Schlesinger centenary retrospective that @ClaireNico and I have produced is underway, with screenings planned from Canterbury to Inverness. Full details on our website, with more confirmed venues coming soon: schlesinger-100.webflow.io theguardian.com/film/2026/feb/…

@themoderns_ @ClaireNico Aw, thanks so much Annabel!! That's so kind of you. And yes, Terminus is brilliant, isn't it? Fingers crossed, maybe we'll get to screen it somewhere near Waterloo station at some point!

The two most telling Terence Davies quotes from tonight's event: 'Success is transient - only failure endures.' 'It's better to be completely forgotten than half-remembered.'

A thrill to be in a sold-out crowd at yesterday's 35mm screening of The Neon Bible - a film whose lacklustre reputation belies both its brilliance and importance in Terence Davies's development, with its careful staging and shifting moods carried through long takes like this one:

In which I stun the nation by being the first random punter allowed to snout around in Terence Davies's personal archives, and make a heartbreaking discovery about the possible inspiration behind that unforgettable montage sequence from The House of Mirth: bfi.org.uk/features/teren…

And, true to form, there are already far more obituaries for Peter Watkins today, now that he is dead, than there were celebrations for him on Wednesday, when he was still alive. Why should we celebrate These dead men more than the dying? - TS Eliot, Little Gidding (1942)

A fitting critical tribute to the great Peter Watkins on this, his 90th birthday. And, wholly in keeping with his career-length neglect, this appears to be today's only marker for one of the greatest living British directors: one who hasn't been able to make a film for 25 years.

Radical British filmmaker Peter Watkins was briefly tipped by the BBC before The War Game made him a controversial pariah. But he persisted — and now, at 90, he is a hero of liberated, formally remarkable socialist art. tribunemag.co.uk/author/jake-ro…

In which I make enough appearances on disc to fill out a quad, thus saving physical media singlehandedly. After Britain's first X cert, Powell's earliest work, and Akerman's Jewishest film, just recorded new commentary for a Terence Davies stunner, out 24th November from the BFI!

Thrilled to be taking part in the discussion following the @BFI Southbank screening of Anna May Wong's rarely-seen final British film, Java Head - (in)complete with very obvious last-minute censor cuts. Tickets still available for tomorrow at 6pm in NFT2: whatson.bfi.org.uk/Online/default…
