I don't know where to begin here. They've lost very few, if any, highly paid players to the portal. Only 1 or 2 of the transfers would be in the surprising category. Now they've got to pay the freshman QB and the freshman RB and the soon-to-be new starters on defense.
Jonathan Smith@DegenerateTBone

"OSU isn't gonna overspend" They've signed 5 guys that most fans have never heard of while losing 20+ players plus NFL Draft decisions. All of that should mean more NIL $ Plus they've missed on a number of big name targets. I get they aren't going to overspend. But...spend?

@greycole05 @the_maga999999 They 1000% did not want to govern/oversee player compensation. Again, they spent billions of dollars to protect the facade of amateurism.

@MarcGivler @the_maga999999 I think they did. They’ve just never been collectively smart enough to do it effectively. I guess it has to start somewhere, though. Revamping the entire calendar and portal rules should be next.

Always been pro-player compensation and always will be. Will not be pro agents trying to extort schools, telling kids they can get money on the open market that they won't get and leaving a lot of players worse off.

@EffzehKollumbus Yet it's not unusual at all in college football and certainly not unique to Ohio State.

@MarcGivler There’s no universe where having to replace 20+ on your roster with new players that don’t know your playbook is a good thing. That isn’t done in a single other sport including pro football.

@MarcGivler Salaries in NFL can go up because it’s coming out of revenue which is also going up. NIL in college is so reliant on donors that at some point they will say enough is enough.

One issue is agents are of course way too involved and are used to landscapes in the Pros where salaries steadily increase year over year like clockwork, that is decidedly not happening in the transfer market as a whole.

Don't let the absurd OSU transfer portal discourse distract you from the fact that the SEC was gifted half the viable playoff field and beat exactly 0 teams from other P4 leagues.

@MarcGivler If your school lets you in the portal, do they have to take you back?

In short, tons of stories out there of Player X going to School Y & asking for a whole bunch of money & School Y saying "good luck, go get it if you can". Most players won't get that & either have to swallow pride & return or take less than they were told they could get elsewhere by the adults around them.

@EffzehKollumbus Yeah. The losing the players part comes first that's why you're REplacing those guys. That comes second. They also just signed one of their biggest recruiting classes in recent memory.

@MarcGivler I mean you need guys to field a roster. You can’t just lose 25 guys off your roster with no replacement

@the_maga999999 They wanted nothing to do with governing player compensation. Hence why they spent and lost Billions (with a B) fighting it in court.

@MarcGivler They did back in the day. Laid the game down in schools. Then everyone cried and water the players paid. Then lawsuits. You got what you all wanted. So quit crying about it.

So your hypothesis, since it's January freaking 8th of 2026, is that after being one of top spenders each of the last few years, that they all of a sudden won't be? And your sharing that on a day where Texas who has like 2 LBs left on its roster lost a highly regarded LB in the portal to OSU?

@MarcGivler @_Pat_Murphy I'm asking about 2026 spending? You jumped in my mentions to argue about how much/little OSU is spending this year, and you then quote articles about last year? Sorry I'm not getting whatever this bit is. My bad. Happy to disengage at this point. Enjoy your night.

@MarcGivler Aren’t you overlooking the fact that they’re losing potentially 5 first rd draft picks to the NFL. Shouldn’t that theoretically wipe some of the biggest existing costs off the books?

@DegenerateTBone @_Pat_Murphy Texas has like 0 rbs and 2 lbs on its roster right now and just lost a lb target it desperately wanted to Ohio State. But yes, OSU isn't spending.

@MarcGivler @_Pat_Murphy I appreciate the IG graphic with no specific numbers, as well as the article regarding spending before the House settlement. Was curious if you guys are reporting anything about the here and now with OSU, not from 2024? No worries if not, but that's what we were discussing.

Or you could ask any recruiting rival of Ohio State who laughs at the notion that OSU doesn't spend. Or better yet, you could apply some common sense thinking that guys like Smith, Downs, Styles, etc. Aren't playing for a major discount. Or that the entire senior class last year came back without major raises.

@DegenerateTBone @_Pat_Murphy And good luck finding a player or especially an agent who's going to fess up on the record to having his client ask for a million, turn down a 500k counter and end up getting 300k in the portal.

@MarcGivler @_Pat_Murphy That's a fine prediction, though I don't know how we'd quantify it? Would love to see some reporting to verify how much OSU is offering certain players vs others across CFB Mostly, I care about OSU winning on the field, not the "we didn't spend as much" game you're referring to.
