@MishaBurnett @NotJohnDaker I did a chapter a day during the first covid lockdown. That way it was never 'too much'. 135 days. But yes, I learned a lot about whales and whaling.
English

@NotJohnDaker You got me beat. I could not force myself to read more than a couple of chapters.

@greywulf Absolutely not of no worth, but take care and all the best

@bpardoe870 @TaraBull Met my Swedish friend's new boyfriend this summer. When he said we were going to do just that with a 7m boat I thought we'd spend an hour faffing around.
Nope, not even five minutes from driving up to casting off. Including a reverse around a 90° turn due to a boat coming out!
English

@TaraBull Next week, have him try and back up a boat trailer into the water.
English

@greywulf Oooh, sortition! I came up with a character (and the world of Havant) to whom this had happened. Page 20 of Issue 5. reaversdeep.com/index.php/down…

@YiorgiosMatheos Ah! A photo to warm a librarian's heart!
English

@jpmccarthyjr @YiorgiosMatheos I was hoping my reMarkable might be the sweet spot between the two, but haven't had a chance to try it with solo games yet.
English

@MarchHarrier @YiorgiosMatheos Yeah, i find i very quickly lapse into 'writing mode' if i am working on a keyboard, for some reason, but find it easier to focus on the gameplay while using notebooks and pencils
English

@YiorgiosMatheos @jpmccarthyjr I think you have to see it as more of a writing experience than a gaming experience. Which of course may not be everyone's cup of tea.
English

@jpmccarthyjr I just can’t get into the mindset of having a fight or competition with myself. Almost feels like cheating ?

@SandyofCthulhu @GeoGDF01 Andy Hollis? What THE Andy Hollis whose name pops up every time I play Kennedy Approach? (1985 C64 game).
Yes, still loving playing it 40 years later! Please thank him if you're in touch. If only my salary for all those shifts I've put in over the years was real!
English

At MicroProse, one of the top programmers, and a good friend, was Andy Hollis. He had two little girls. I noticed that he didn’t work long long hours, despite the fact that this obviously annoyed the president, Bill Stealey.
I mean he would work late for a few weeks near the end of a project. He got the job done. This was back in 1988-1993, when the computer dev culture was very much work round-the-clock. When it was a badge of honor to leave after midnight.
One day he told me. “I used to work like that back on Gunship and F-15 Strike Eagle. One day I was home, and my wife showed me pictures of my daughters when they were 2 & 3 and I realized I didn’t remember them at that age. At all. I’d never seen them because I got home after they were asleep.”
Andy Hollis looked at me grimly. “Never again.”
And as far as I know he never did.
Also Andy looks a lot like Tom Cruise but with a human personality.

@OriginalGrogna1 @sikkoukakari If you're interested in SF, try Zozer's Hostile: Solo
English

I’ve been interested in exploring the solo gaming scene.
If anyone out there does a lot of solo gaming, what systems and tools do you use?

@PulpLibrarian On a budget, I 'only' had one of these: collection.sciencemuseumgroup.org.uk/objects/co8103…
But it was brilliant!
English

@comhcinc @PulpLibrarian Yes, yes! I had one of those and loved it! It's now in a museum.

There is not much that beats a good heist in sci-fi.
Reach Adventure 9: Hellworld Heists has five of them, each testing your Travellers to come up with the right plan... and then rob a grav train, prison convoy, and a palace!
