The abduction of journalist Khurram Ansari over a tweet is unacceptable and must be condemned. The video in question was aired by state broadcaster Pakistan Television Corporation and carried by mainstream news channels it was not “fake.” Using threats of PECA and targeting a journalist for sharing publicly broadcast content is intimidation, not accountability. He has been released now after journalist bodies raised their voices, but the act itself raises serious concerns. Punjab Government must explain and ensure such actions are never repeated. Press freedom cannot be treated as a crime.

Completely illegal, unconstitutional, & baseless order without any roots in due process, especially as transfer application is pending in the High Court. Sentencing human rights lawyers for 10 years & Rs. 36 million fine for tweets rights violations makes Pakistan laughing stock.

Iman & Hadi apparently have been arrested in the FIR below. What’s shocking about the FIR is that it was registered one year ago & kept hidden since. In this fabricated FIR lawyers from across Pakistan (Lahore, Karachi & Islamabad) including myself have been nominated. What a mockery! Sealing of FIR’s and keeping them hidden have been declared unlawful by courts in numerous judgments. Clearly an unlawful act by Islamabad police. Then inclusion of terrorism offences for a peaceful protest, which after a year we have found out had turned violent, ridicules and trivialises the anti-terrorism law which is meant to prosecute terrorists and not lawyers or ordinary citizens. This government has surely lost all decency and is bent upon violating all norms. It must not forget that times change and their draconian tactics one day will come back to haunt them.
