I have an unpopular take on Kwam1’s recent “ambassadorial” appointment, and similar cases involving other erring celebrities. In this context, I’m not convinced “ambassador” is the right word or that it should even carry a positive connotation. In many cases, when public figures commit certain offenses, they’re required to make public service announcements or participate in awareness campaigns as a corrective measure. These roles typically come with no perks or compensation and are meant purely to leverage their influence to spread a corrective message. In other countries, this is explicitly considered community service, not an honorary ambassadorial role. The distinction matters because the intent is rehabilitative and punitive, not celebratory. A few examples: •In 2007, after a DUI-related arrest, Paris Hilton was ordered to speak to high school students about the dangers of drunk driving. This was part of her sentence, not a corporate endorsement. •In 2008, Khloé Kardashian was sentenced to attend alcohol-education programs and speak publicly about DUI risks after her own drunk driving arrest. By calling such corrective measures “ambassadorial appointments,” we risk misrepresenting their purpose and diluting the seriousness of the offense.
