Current state (31st July) of #Aneto Glacier,
Although a 'very small' glacier (0.47 km²), it is the largest in the Pyrenees, and the highest 🏔️❄️
Mean remaining ice thickness is about 11 m...🔥
It was 15 m in 2020 and 35 m in 1981
Let's do the math! 🤔

Would you still call #glacier ice loss in 2022 "extreme"? It's rather a devastating hurricane.
Mass change is so far beyond historical variability (1961-2021) that - statistically - it's virtually impossible. However, we should get used to the impossible in the #ClimateCrisis !

Crevasse situation is changing. Stay safe when traveling on glaciers, especially now in the transition to winter!
We also observed lots of new crevasses on Hintereisferner during last weeks field work!

Two views from #Wildstrubel summit exactly 1 year apart. Check out how the extreme summer of 2022 changed the crevasse situation! While it was an enjoyable walk over the #glacier in 2021, there's a labyrinth of crevasses now - the #ClimateCrisis also alters mountaineering hazards

It was an emotional moment for me yesterday up at "my" Pizol #Glacier. The final Good Bye, amidst the melancholic fog, together with 30 supporters of @KlimaschutzCH I picked up my last measurement pole (did not survive the summer of course) from a 20x20m ice patch... Farewell!

All winter snow has melted on #hintereisferner, even on highest elevation. There the glaciers continue their disintegration and rock falls make work a bit scary

1/3 The current surface melt anomaly over the Svalbard ice caps is incredible with a cumulated melt from the beginning of this summer 2 times larger than previous records!! Such positive anomaly is even statistically unlikely ... without global warming. Averaged from ...

Ice avalanche in the Dolomites claiming several victims!
Impressive overview of the detachment zone. It's a site one would not normally expect that. However, particular conditions seemed to have contributed to this disaster.
Are similar events possible elsewhere in the Alps?

Incredible footage from an helicopter of the mountain rescue of the basal detachment in Marmolada. Water lubrication at the base (or interstrata) and increased pressure in water-filled crevasses are probably the main causes for this catastrophic event
