Dear @L_MacAulay Thousands of terrified Canadian draft horses are crammed into wooden crates each year and flown 8000 km to their demise, all to be brutally slaughtered and served raw to wealthy clients. These horses endure turbulence, often falling in their crates unable to right themselves for the duration of these arduous, hellish flights....when one horse goes down in a crate, they all go down. It is a tangled hideous disaster....the horses are denied water and food and suffer paralysing abject fear. When they are finally unloaded in Japan- they are doused with a poisonous, harsh disinfectant. To say this entire practice (ordeal) is inhumane would be an understatement. Most shipments exceed the 28 hour legal limit for exporting horses. A staggering number of these large, innocent draft horses die- most of these deaths go UNREPORTED- yes-None of the deaths, injuries, or illnesses are reflected in CFIA records. Along with tens of thousands of compassionate Canadians across the country, I celebrated when the @JustinTrudeau government MANDATED that the Agriculture Minister ban the export of live horses in December 2021. But she did absolutely NOTHING - and now, as it stands today- more than 7,700 horses have died in the past three years. In a time where people all over the world are being asked to watch their carbon footprint, fly less, eat locally, eat less meat- these exports are the antithesis of what we shouldn't be doing. The Liberal government PROMISED Canadians this would end if elected, yet here we are- approaching another election and this key promise remains unfulfilled. Senators- make good on this promise to Canadians via regulatory amendments. Minister MacAulay—I would very much appreciate a brief phone meeting with you to discuss the need for regulations to make the export of Canadian horses for slaughter a thing of the past. Please keep your party’s promise and end this hideous industry. Jann Arden
