Absolutely brilliant PhD oration by @elyas_arvell. An exceptional scientist, a generous colleague, a fierce advocate, and a wonderful human; it's been an absolute gift to have been invited to come on this journey with them. They have helped make our lab @TheFlorey a special place

Super proud of my sibling
@elyas_arvell
for their excellent #PhD Oration, but I agree with @TheGordonLab - I’m even more proud of the excellent human, unafraid to be their authentic self that they’ve grown into along the way! Last slog then onto the next adventure!

Thanks to Kiessling for making #scicomm a tiny bit easier!

@LifeAfterMyPhD @ShineInEdu (The last slog of writing/analysing data for my PhD overlaps with me starting out in industry but it now gets to be a super niche hobby which feels less like work, more like play! 🤓)
English

@LifeAfterMyPhD @ShineInEdu I second this but added company culture because I felt like I needed a space to feel safe and supported to grow professionally. Lifestyle and culture made me choose industry.

@MarikaECarr @happier_version Exactly! I am up to four pages so far for that.
Don't forget that it's okay to also throw shade at people in your acknowledgements...

English

@happier_version Try to take meal breaks with people not screens. Make time for people outside academia too… it’s a job not your life.
I’ve had a lot of loneliness in my PhD journey and the above have been hard learnt but (almost) always make me feel a little stronger and more connected.
English

@happier_version Also, ask for help when you’re lonely or feeling isolated. There may be informal mentoring opportunities etc that can meet that need with no pressure that can be arranged by your grad school or local liaison officer.

Jones & Koelwyn (@sloan_kettering, @WeillCornell) discuss how exercise induces changes in the tumor microenvironment through immunometabolism & how this may blunt cancer pathogenesis.

@elisabethrolstn This is a mood, especially with COVID flow on effects… I’m currently 4.5 years real-world time, equivalent of 3.75 years if I had been FT. I tell people in in my ‘final year’ for this very reason, it gives a better idea of what I’m working on anyway. Will do so until it’s done
