Mikel Arteta asked if Premier League teams were capable of producing such an exciting game as PSG vs Bayern: "Well, there is something that when I look at that game, Bayern v PSG is probably the best game I have ever witnessed on the quality of two teams, and especially the individual quality that the players deliver. I’ve never seen something like this. But when I look at the amount of minutes and the freshness of those players, then I’m not surprised. To deliver those moments of quality, you have to be very fresh and the difference in the leagues and the way they’re competing is night and day.
“And you just have to see a lot of stats that have been recently around it. So we are competing in two different worlds, so you cannot compare one part of that without giving any context to the other. I don’t think it’s fair."

Turns out the story of the year was just...made up. and it gets worse.
- John Doe is Chirayu Rana, 35, now a principal at Bregal Sagemount. he left JPMorgan and went straight to private equity.
- The whole "threaten his bonus" premise collapsed. Hajdini reported to a completely different managing director than Rana. she had no say over his compensation.
- JPMorgan pulled phone records, reviewed emails, interviewed the full team. found nothing. Rana even refused to participate in his own investigation.
- A colleague described Rana as "socially awkward" but someone who "met the requirements" to stay at the bank.
- Before any lawsuit, he tried to negotiate a payout in the "millions" to leave the bank quietly. they didn't bite.
- He filed court filing, then his lawyers retracted it for "corrections" and deleted it. But the Daily Mail already ran the whole thing and the rest twitter did its thing.
so he tried to get paid, didn't, then filed a now-retracted complaint against someone who couldn't touch his bonus. wild.
feel terrible for her and her family.

@sarahsalviander I’ve started carrying a small prayer knot and going to it instead of the phone. “Lord Jesus, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner… repeat. “

Sitting in my office on a rainy day and I'm thinking there’s something profoundly important about real things. We live in a material world that God created and called good. As Christians, we’re not to conform to the world’s values, but at the same time we're spiritual beings with material bodies living in a material creation. Too much virtual life simply isn’t good for mind, body, or spirit.
I’ve felt this shift in my own life. Virtual stuff seemed pretty cool at first. I bought a first-gen Nook the week it came out. I boxed up my second-tier books, and loaded my Nook with ten tons of public domain classics. I stored away all my DVDs and Blu-rays too. I still remember giving a quizzical side-eye to a foreign grad student years ago who ranted that streaming would kill everything good and we should keep our physical media. Turns out he was right. I'm really glad I kept mine. I'm buying and reading more books these days, especially hardcovers.
People need work they do with their hands. Most of my work is on a computer, but I also talk to people face-to-face as part of my job. When I get home, I move my body – at the gym, walking the neighborhood, taking in the sights, sounds, and smells of the real world. In my spare time I bake, crochet, draw, paint, and I’ve started a new hobby: designing and binding notebooks. I hope to sell these things – not for a big payday, but to fund the hobby and get handmade things into other people’s hands where they’ll be used and appreciated. I likewise buy handmade goods from small makers.
I’ve been to the movie theater several times already this year, after going to maybe two movies total since 2019. After a pretty dry season, movies are finally good again.
I carry a pocket notebook and pen everywhere. That little notebook has been a total game changer. It's helped me cut my phone scrolling by about 90%, and my mental state has improved tremendously. Instead of mindlessly scrolling and ending up feeling empty and depressed, I jot down ideas, work through problems, make lists, and capture thoughts. I keep a separate notebook in my gym bag to journal my workouts in between sets. My gym time is more satisfying now.
I worry we’re automating too much of life for ease and comfort. Yes, I’m thankful for my washing machine so I don't have to beat my laundry against a rock. But I hope we never reach the point where everything is automated, robotic, delivered to our door, and stripped of human effort.
Sigmund Freud was a major creepy weirdo, but he did get one thing right: people need love and work to be happy. Love happens in person. Some work needs to be done with our hands. Even our pleasures and comforts are better when they require thought and physical effort.
C.S. Lewis captured this beautifully when he reminded us that matter isn’t just a prison for the soul, but part of God’s good creation. When we put first things first (loving God), we actually love this world better, not less. The physical isn’t opposed to the spiritual; surprisingly, it’s where the spiritual often shows up.
I’m done scrolling and streaming my life away. I want more real. More conversations, more tangible beauty, more work with my hands, more presence. Y’all… I’m this close to getting a landline and writing letters to people by hand.
Who else here is reclaiming a little more of the real? I'd love to know how you're doing it.
