@CatchyUser4 @BrentToderian Wearing a life jacket and helmet in the shower/tub is 1000X safer than being naked too. Stats are like 1 death to 100 million miles driven. It’s actually pretty safe too. And with full self drive it’ll get even safer. Compare benefits not just deaths.

@MarkMoneyCoach @BrentToderian Transit is 20-60x safer per mile traveled than driving. 150 people are killed on public transit a year in the US, while 40,000 people are killed driving.

One of the biggest disinformation campaigns ever applied to cities involves the constant claims that “driving pays its way.” It’s actually MASSIVELY subsidized, while things like walking, biking, public transit & supportive housing for the unhoused actually SAVE PUBLIC MONEY. HT to the classic Andy Singer cartoon. #UrbanTruth

@itsnwts Ironically “Most women aren’t funny” applies to this same story perfectly.

Actually, Out of ten men, one makes a sexual joke at a woman, two laugh, three fake a chuckle to fit in, and four stay silent. None of them speak up. Later, nine of them still believe they're the "good guys." But from the woman's perspective, the laughter, the silence, the looking away, it all creates the same environment. So when women say"most men are the same," this is what they mean: not that every man harasses women, but that most men help protect the system that does.

You just spent four paragraphs explaining why killing civilians is actually smart tactics, then ended with "we'd wipe out 25% of your population if we felt like it" and thinks this is a rebuttal. It's a confession. You didn't collapse the framework. You confirmed it. You just told us that American violence is strategy, and everyone else's is a crime. That's exactly the two-tier moral universe I described. And you proved you can't even see it. Also, Dresden, Hiroshima, Gaza, Vietnam, your entire defense of American conduct is "war is brutal and always has been." Cool. Then stop acting shocked when people call it what it is. You don't get "it's just war" AND "we're the good guys." Pick one. You chose honestly for once. I'll give you that.

Ask an American about the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. A substantial portion will tell you it was necessary. Tragic, but necessary. It ended the war. It saved lives. Hard choices in impossible circumstances. Now ask them how they would feel if another country had done it to an American city. Watch the framework collapse in real time. Suddenly "necessary" is not a category that applies. Suddenly there are no hard choices and impossible circumstances. Suddenly it is simply: a crime. An act of war. An atrocity. This is not hypocrisy in the ordinary sense. This is a two-tiered moral universe so deeply internalized that most people living inside it cannot see the structure at all. Violence done to Americans is atrocity by definition. Violence done by Americans requires context. Requires understanding. Requires a discussion of the strategic situation. This is the psychological furniture. This is what empire builds inside the people who benefit from it. And it is almost invisible from the inside.

@nxt888 @joesanders33 “Let’s judge only wartime conduct against the entirety of a civilizations history” Fair comparison! And one could argue basically everything Japan did in those few years was worse btw 😂

Okay. Let's take that seriously. Japan's wartime conduct was catastrophic. Nanjing. The comfort women system. Unit 731. Biological weapons testing on prisoners. Documented atrocities across Asia. Now let's look at what the United States had done by 1945. The near-total extermination of the indigenous population of North America. The enslavement of millions of Africans across centuries. The firebombing of Tokyo in March 1945, which killed more civilians in a single night than either atomic bomb. The conquest of the Philippines, which involved concentration camps and the killing of civilians characterized by American commanders as a "racial war." By your logic, judge the country by its prior conduct, the United States had an extensive record of its own before anyone decided it had earned the moral authority to atomize two cities. You want to apply a conduct standard. Fine. Apply it consistently. Or admit you only apply it in one direction.

@nxt888 Ask Japanese if it was necessary. They’ll probably say no they were already losing. Ask a football fan if their team deserved to lose. Ask a mother if her child deserved a bad grade… You’re stating obvious facts of human nature as if they are profound..

@HistoryBoomer We saw what happens when you randomly give ppl money in Covid. None of those things happened. Everyone just bought more shit. Giving everyone 17k one time wouldn’t solve anyone’s lives. Prices of goods would rise and in a year it would be gone and we’d lose great companies.

The US has 989 billionaires with a net worth of at least 5.7 trillion dollars hording our resources. If we distributed that $$$ equitably, regular Americans could leave their jobs and explore lives of creativity and self-growth, with food, clothing, and shelter provided for free.

@RBReich Yeah let’s do that so we can spend another 100b on not building a train. Great idea. I’m sure they’ll use the 5% tax really well. They may even plan another train they don’t build! Just what we need

I've taught European history for 30 years. Americans have always asked me how the Holocaust was possible, how Germans could have enabled a madman reveling in mass murder to carry out his plans. Now we can see in real time how this is enabled; now we have front-row seats.

People who equate car ownership with freedom are hilarious. They forget all the costs associated w/ cars: insurance, maintenance, repairs, registration, personal property taxes… But don’t equate the freedom to chose your method of mobility (bike, car, bus, train) with “freedom”

California currently has a flat 8.84% corporate tax. Whether a company makes $100 or $1 billion in profit, the rate is the same. It’s time for a tax code that recognizes the difference between a local shop and a global giant.
