My lunchtime policy suggestion: by EO, add a clause in FY26 to all Federal contracts and grants - "funded activities must be conducted by US citizens only.". Then let IGs do audits and you'll be amazed how much hiring picks up.

@BrianBalfourNC Yep. Salaries for administrative roles, for "virtual instruction" and for supplemental tutoring. All of it basically flushed down the toilet, with not an iota of student improvement, along with disjointed budgets when the one-time funds ended.

Did this post trigger a staffer immune response so severe my phone kept ringing until 2:53 a.m.? Were there veiled threats to tank maritime legislation, strip NDAA provisions I care about, and slow-roll future maritime appointments for friends like @HungCao_VA? Is the Pope Catholic? I owed one staffer who reached out a serious favor, so I moved the post to subscribers only. They call it the Blob for a reason. She didn’t ask for it to be deleted. He definitely didn’t want it deleted. But the message from the powers that be was clear: leave it up, and there would be consequences. Who ordered the takedown? Nobody will say. I could have called out her former boss @SenatorCantwell until the cows came home and absolutely nothing would have happened. But name one mid-level staffer who’s built a fiefdom blocking literal life-saving appropriations at sea? All hell breaks loose, and rogue waves start crashing across the decks. Our elected officials don’t run the Senate. A handful of very powerful staffers do. And guess what? It’s not just the Senate. These staffers are embedded across the administration as political appointees too. That’s the price any new administration pays to get its appointees confirmed, federal judges included. That’s how the Blob reaches into all three branches and touches everything. The worst part? The best staffers get poached by K Street. What’s left behind is a small handful of true patriots (yes, some staffers are excellent), and a much larger group who either stayed behind because they love power or aren’t offered jobs anywhere else.

For those of you that have never worked as a professional automotive technician, you may not know that a technician's set of tools and toolbox may cost more than your new car. The shop does not supply a technician's tools. Technicians have to purchase them with their own money, and they continue to have to purchase more tools as technology keeps changing.

@MarkUrban All shops mark up parts mostly to help cover warranty should that part go bad. And parts vary in price a lot depending on quality and manufacturer. Think of it this way. Would you ask a chef how much they paid for your steak?

If any of you are wondering why car repairs are so expensive now, one reason is parts cost. As an auto technician, we use to rebuild most everything, (starters, alternators, calipers, wheel cylinders, fuel pumps, etc.) Now we can no longer do that as everything is now replaced and only available as an assembly, not individual parts. Manufacturers do that because it saves them labor time dollars on the assembly line. Examples: Fuel pump $75.00, now fuel pump sender assembly $475.00 and up, Coolant thermostat $15.00. now thermostat and housing assembly $160.00 and more, electric window motor $45.00, now window motor regulator assembly $370.00.Throttle cable $35.00 now throttle body for $500.00 The list goes on and on but you get the picture. Please don't blame your mechanic, as they are not seeing that money increase on parts, and its not their fault.

When you pay the same as the local Target, you kinda get what you pay for. Sub pay is ridiculous. Subs should make 2-3 times what a salaried teacher makes in a day, as they get no benefits, no guarantee of work, and often have to walk into difficult classrooms with zero knowledge of the kids involved.
