@CentennialHawks My son is an incoming freshman and is interested in playing basketball, is it still possible to get added to the list for the Monday zoom meeting?

@Clara80275264 @KernCMC @Mathgarden Totally agree! Applying math to real world situations is really important when teaching. If you can include an element of play while you are doing it, even better. #EDEL5200

@KernCMC @Mathgarden Using play is a wonderful way for students to work with their hands to discover how math can apply to real world scenarios. Some students learn more when working with their hands so play is definitely more beneficial to our younger population as well as multiple modality learners

Q2: How can we present and see the most challenging ideas through the “unjaded eyes of a child”? What are the benefits of doing so? What is the role of play in this approach? #kerncmc #KernMathRecess #EDEL5200 #MathRecess @MathGarden
English

@KernCMC @Mathgarden Turn the challenging idea into a fun story. The bigger and more awe-inspiring the better. Not only will this spark curiosity in your students, but it will build enthusiasm to learn and explore new things while also incorporating an element of play into the lesson. #EDEL5200

@clarissadeltoro @KernCMC Great point! Instead of just numbers and equations, mathematics becomes much more valuable and appreciated when students see the influence has on many aspects of our everyday life. #EDEL5200

Q3: What steps can we take to prove society that mathematics is for everyone? What should we share regarding struggle and perseverance? #kerncmc #KernMathRecess #EDEL5200

@johndav15861284 @KernCMC @Mathgarden I agree. It was shocking to hear that approximately one-third of the school year is dedicated to preparing for standardized testing. It is time to free our students and teachers from this burden and change an obviously outdated and inefficient system. #EDEL5200
English

@KernCMC @Mathgarden I think the main lesson is not bogging our students down with standardized testing and allowing them to have fun in the process of learning. We need to be more flexible with how and why we test #EDEL5200

Q4: Watch the video below. What are the main lessons we can learn from Finland’s education system? #kerncmc #KernMathRecess #EDEL5200 #MathRecess @Mathgarden youtube.com/watch?v=4-Dcjw…

@KernCMC @Mathgarden We can learn from Finland. It is time to change from our obsolete, test-based system and embrace proven methods that allow our kids to be kids. School days and years need to be shorter and relevant subjects such as art, music, and civics need to be in the curriculum. #EDEL5200

@Alondra_C15 @KernCMC @Mathgarden Great point about students being embarrassed when they make a mistake. Being embarrassed while in front of peers, especially at a young age can be tough for kids. Stressing effort is a great way to help counter this, and tells students it is okay to make mistakes. #EDEL5200

@KernCMC @Mathgarden Some of emotions related to math in the classroom would be frustration, embarrassement, disappoinment, and confusion. Embarrassment and disappointment can be seen together when a student did get the answer right. But this is were we as teacher have to movivate and encourage them.

Q2: Many people would argue that mathematics is the most objective learning endeavor! Yet, at the same time, mathematics is full of emotions! What are some of the emotions that people experience when learning mathematics? #kerncmc #KernMathRecess #EDEL5200 #MathRecess @Mathgarden
English

@KernCMC @Mathgarden Anger, fear, frustration, despair...these are a few negative emotions some people experience when learning math, but it is not all bad. Let's not forget the happiness and pride we feel when solving a tough problem, and the confidence that is built from this success. #EDEL5200

@jollyian94 @KernCMC @Mathgarden I hear both of my children tell me math is boring all of the time. It is not fun, or something they seem to enjoy, especially as they get older. Perhaps more play in the intermediate age groups is needed to buck this trend? #EDEL5200
English

@KernCMC @Mathgarden Like the book comparison, Wayne Gretzky was the greatest because he loved to play. With Math, children would love it more/be more interested if they can use their imagination and just play! If we as teachers can make math fun, children will want to do more of it. #EDEL5200
English

Q1: Why is it so important to replace “passive approaches of learning mathematics (seat work, worksheets, scripted programs, and rote learning)” with play? #kerncmc #KernMathRecess #EDEL5200 #MathRecess @Mathgarden
English

@KernCMC @Mathgarden Role Playing Games like Dungeons and Dragons, traditional games like Monopoly, counting games like Yahtzee, the list goes on and on. By encouraging and supporting gameplay, both at home and in school(when appropriate), we promote better mathematical memories for all! #EDEL5200
English

Q3: What are some games that can promote better mathematical memories among our students, friends, and families? #kerncmc #KernMathRecess #EDEL5200 #MathRecess @Mathgarden
English

@KernCMC Innovate and adapt our teaching methods to make math fun for everyone. Encourage collaboration, provide relevant material that keeps students engaged, and encourage persistence. Stress perseverance despite failure, this is when the real brain growth happens!
