Taught one of my favorite insights from economics: Costly signals matter. Talk is cheap, supply outstrips demand.

Had no idea there were so many economists on X. Beautiful! Following as many as I can.

Ironic comment from Joel Mokyr since this is now the 4th year in a row that an economic historian has won.

this is better but still chicken-winged for some reason. I also almost fell off the stage & cracked my head on the TVs behind me. Other than that, talk went well I think.

Quote tweet after quote tweet, reply after reply, telling me I’m so stupid for finding it mysterious that America would have a baby boom after 1945. Except… The baby boom started in ~1935. So, as I was saying: Nobody understands the baby boom!

Still think the baby boom is underrated as an all-timer sociological mystery Everyone knows it happened. And it’s not clear that anybody has a completely satisfying answer to WTF to marriage and fertility between 1935 and 1965. Just a total cultural detour.

Econ teachers check out this new game by @MarketPowerYT at mapgdp.com I'm going to try it out on the projector for my next class. Students can guess GDP per capita based on pictures pulled from Google maps.

So many people following the invocation to "love thy neighbour as thyself", and who have absorbed the spirit of "You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also."
Derek Andersen@DerekjAndersen

This morning with our burned down church still smoldering and four saints murdered, members of the Church of Jesus Christ raised $60k for...checks notes...the shooter's wife and children. Most donations are anonymous. Each Christian comment will make you cry more than the last.

@wsandholtz @JohnHolbein1 You could probably easily do this with some of the people with econ PhDs but employed in a political science department. Then you don't even have to lie about the article. Just change how you frame the author.

Study idea: ▪️RCT on economists. ▪️Provide a short article. ▪️Hold everything about the article constant, but randomize whether the study was done by an economist or not. ▪️Ask them how credible they deem the study's findings. I would bet there's a big effect.
